Hubert Eaves IV thumbs his way into 2023 with the funky new single “Let’s Get Serious”. It's fun, infectious, and a perfect blend of both Smooth Jazz and Funk. With this being his 4th single in 3 years is it now time for a full length album? We're looking at you H4!

The Verses

Let’s Get Serious starts off with a slick unison groove that is smoothened out by a faint string chord in the background. At 00:10 the string chord disappears and we find ourselves in the eye of the groove. The first verse is basically Hubert, a sax, and what sounds to be a trombone and/or trumpet playing in unison. For the first couple play throughs it’s fun but after the novelty wears off it begins to feel like a backing tracking waiting for lead. Fortunately, it's only the first verse where this style of play takes place.

Verse 2 is not clearly defined and the song may not actually have a second verse at all. After the second go 'round of the hook the song starts to feel very avant-garde in a traditional jazz sense. It is free-flowing and doesn't seem to stick to any traditional song structure. You're on a windy road and the destination is not quite clear...buckle up and enjoy the ride!

The Hook

Let's Get Serious truly begins to find its stride during the hook. We see a departure from the unison lines and a female vocalist come in with a funky "Let's get serious". She is backed by a Phoenix Horns style brass section that really make her vocals shine. At the "2 and" there is a small guitar lick that is the perfect fill-in for the space left after the "Let's Get Serious" line. If we look at the hook as 8 measures, the 4th and 8th measure are were H4 shows his chops with some groovy bass fills. Overall, the hook on Let's Get Serious is fun, funky, and the highlight of the song.

The Breaks

Around 2:00, H4, a blues guitar, the sax, and others have a shared solo section that feels like they're all just hanging out having a party. At 2:16 the brass section comes in to break up all the fun and help transition the song from the solos to a unison bridge that leads us back to the Hook.

At 3:19 the song smoothens out again with some string stabs that give the track a whole different vibe. There's some keyboard and flute in the background that all work together to say "that's all folks". H4 also makes a vocal appearance by saying "Let's Get" which is a cool touch. H4 always sounds like the coolest man in the studio when he drops a line on his songs. If you don't believe it, listed to Incubated Funk.

Parting Thoughts

Let's Get Serious is yet another great single from Hubert Eaves IV that foreshadows what we can expect from an album. It's exciting, engaging, and takes you on a wild funky ride from start to finish. The first verse however is a drawback and for that reason we give the track a 4 out of 6. Cool take on Hubert Eaves IV. I'm actually more familiar with his pops Hubert Eaves III from his D-Train and Mtume days.
