The smooth soulful songstress known as Erin Stevenson returns this year with her latest single "Smooth Soul". Much like her previous work, Smooth Soul is silky, sexy, groovy, and seductive. In it she is joined by Marion Meadows who contributes some very soulful sax work to the backing composition. Is Smooth Soul foreshadowing a follow-up to 2017’s Naked? We can only guess...

The Verses

When the verse begins you're instantly teleported into a classy club, dimly lit and filled only with the sartorially astute. Stevenson’s sensual vocal delivery sets the mood and expertly conveys the emotions felt by a Woman enraptured by the presence of her love interest. The lyrics are simple and refined and provide Erin the space necessary to add her creativity as an artist and singer. Her range and control are shown in lines such as:

“I’m drowning, deeper and deeper I fall...

Resistance getting...weaker and weaker and willing to risk it all”

You truly can feel the conflict she is experiencing as she "drowns, deeper" but also how empowered and aware she is when she states "willing to risk it all".

The backing music is reminiscent of a Sade or Anita Baker track…soulful, jazzy, and elegant. It helps create the atmosphere of a classy, desirous and lustful engagement. Saxophone artist Marion Meadows' playing is a nice highlight through the composition that never tries to compete for the limelight. He keeps it pure business in the background and is the icing on the cake after the second chorus.

The Hook

The Hook continues the lustful rendezvous with Stevenson seemingly succumbing to fire and desire she is feeling:

“I’m your fool, and it’s cool

'cause you’re so smooth”

Let's all pray that this guy is not a narcissist because he has Erin Stevenson wrapped around his fingers!

Parting Thoughts

Smooth Soul is a classy foray into the land of lust and desire. One of the song’s biggest pluses is Erin’s restraint throughout it. She doesn’t go on any large runs, no belting, no church singing…just soulful serenading from start to finish. Some may take issue with it as it may make the track feel one-dimensional and that's fine, it's all preference.

This track further cements Erin Stevenson as an artist and substantiates her desire to step from behind acts such as Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake to embark on her own solo career.

Overall we give Smooth Soul 5 out of 6ZEROS.

Who is Erin Stevenson?

Erin Stevenson is a Houston native who is on tour all across California at some of the classiest of establishments. She began her career as a member of "Girls Tyme", an all-girl group that went on to become Destiny's Child. Years later, while working for NASA, Erin decided to use her music CD as a resignation letter. If her Boss thought it was good she'd quit, if he thought it was bad she would return to work the next day.

Her letter of resignation was received and the next day she was asked to tour with Janet Jackson. Erin Stevenson is a phenomenal talent whose story has inspired many and shows how you often will not receive your blessing if you're not willing to leave your comfort zone. She didn't lay waiting for it, she walked, and now she is living her dream.

Stevenson is one of those artists that can sing with life and dance with fire make sure you give her a listen.
