Elon Musk's $44B purchase of Twitter has been rather polarizing in the world of cyberspace. "Right-leaning" individuals view the purchase as the return of free speech while those on "the left" see it as the death of it. Those of us in intelligent Black society are unfazed as Twitter has continuously censored our voices since the days of Jack Dorsey.
In response, many are beginning to seek out, migrate-to, and galvanize the community around Black-owned platforms. But what about Black liberals? Are they too seeking out Black alternatives? No. Many are lock-step with White liberals and are filling our timelines with the doom and gloom that Elon Musk will inevitably bring. But how can Elon be the looming black cloud of censorship if we are already being shadow-banned, suspended, and blocked on Twitter today?
The answer is simple, Black Twitter and its cavalcade of Black liberal loonies are not concerned with the proliferation of "Black voices". They are simply concerned with the continued "success" of their Twitter enclaves and the White validation they receive as a result. Hence why many of them took their doomsday tweets a step further and began to discourage Black people looking for Black-owned alternatives.
Many of these Black liberals went as far as slandering Black-owned apps and encouraged Black people to migrate towards other non-Black alternatives. One individual of note, Leslie Mac (@LeslieMac) decided to make her profile private after a number of users asked her to prove her slanderous claims. What's insidious about individuals such as her and others is that they masquerade their self-hate as skepticism. For instance, when discussing a Black-owned app they'll have several objections/qualifications such as:
...but then totally disregard said objections when discussing a White-owned alternative. In fact, a White-owned platform can make no claims about data ownership/control, will not disclose where the money is going, and will not make any mention of protecting "Blackness" and these people will frequent and recommend it. Why?
The concerns about "the data" and "the money" are not acts of Black skepticism. Black skeptics question everyone and everything with the intent to gain information and make an informed decision. Did Leslie Mac, Mary Molly Jane and others question where their data or money was going when they bought their verification status on the bird app? Why do they continuously frequent Twitter when the platform has never made any effort to acknowledge their qualifications? It's because their "qualifications" are a tool for them to disregard Black-owned alternatives "with cause". When the day comes that their lack of patronage of Black-owned platforms calls into question their "pro-Black" persona they can simply claim that none of them "meet the standard".
So what should we do about these agents of chaos? We need to continue to question them and hold their feet to the fire. Sure, they'll block us or privatize their their pages, but at least we can inject alternate information for people to decipher and interpret.
