PepsiCo has experimented with mealworm powder for its snacks and drinks

PepsiCo — the food company that makes snacks like Doritos, Cheetos, and Quaker Oats cereal — is looking for alternative protein sources for its products.

On the open innovation site NineSights, PepsiCo recently posted a request for "new and novel protein sources for usage in their snacks and beverages."

These non-traditional proteins could include plant-based protein, mycoprotein (a protein made from mushrooms), or insect protein.

The request also mentioned that PepsiCo has already done extensive work with soy, moringa (a protein powder made from dried leaves), duckweed, cricket powder, pea protein, dairy, single cell protein, and mealworm powder (generally made from roasted and milled mealworms).

PepsiCo declined to comment on any specific plans, but spokesperson Andrea Foote said the company's R&D team is working on the project, which is not tied to any one brand.

Other food giants are also experimenting with novel types of proteins, often made from plants. In 2016, Campbell Soup Co. started selling a line of non-dairy, plant-based milk with 10 grams of pea protein per serving. Later that year, Tyson Foods, one of the world's largest meat producers, launched a venture capital fund worth $150 million that invests in startups developing meat alternatives. The VC arm of General Mills, 301 Inc., has also invested in the plant-based protein startups Beyond Meat and Kite Hill, which makes non-dairy cheeses, milks, and yogurts.

PepsiCo's request may reflect a growing consumer shift away from non-traditional protein sources. US sales of foods with alternative proteins totaled $4.9 billion in 2016, according to the Plant-Based Foods Association. The research firm Markets and Markets predicts that the meat substitutes industry will be worth $5.96 billion by 2022.

"Consumers the world over have embraced a variety of high-protein foods, such as Greek-style yogurt and beef jerky style meat products," PepsiCo's request reads. "Unfortunately, that increased level of protein in the product can negatively impact consumer perceptions by adversely impacting texture, taste, color, etc."

Ideally, PepsiCo said it would like to find a high-protein source that has a pleasant taste. Additionally, the company said the protein should be non-GMO, have "a good sustainability story," and have an "easy to pronounce and common" name that avoids "chemical-sounding ingredients."

Pfizer CEO says people who spread misinformation on Covid vaccines are ‘criminals’

What irks me about the wholesale removal of critical thinking is the fact that many will not see the conflict of interest staring them in the face. A guy making billions from a product saying that people who don’t like his product are criminals. This is insanity at this point.

Let's talk about the blog era

Remember the era where there were multiple artists from different genres that you had to find out through blogs or forums? In my opinion it was the last organic element of music...ever since then the music industry took it away and haven't given it back since. I believe that there might be a movement that's similar because mainstream music is at an all time low once again (like 2009) so everyone will become curious to find music that isn't cheaply made and formulatic.

Riders Republic

Anyone grabbing this game? It reminds me a lot of the classic SSX Tricky, but with skiing, biking, & a flying wingsuit. This game looks like a return to those EA Sports Big games that we got back in the PS2 era. Riders Republic just came out, and I completely forgot it was coming out recently. I've been wanting to get it, but have been waiting to check out reviews and heard peoples opinions on it.

If you've played it, is it worth getting?

Do you have any phobias?

Do you have any phobias or irrational fears? Like maybe you're afraid of the dark, or afraid of clowns, snakes, spiders (well, not as irrational if they are dangerous), etc. Honestly, I'm a baby when it comes to insects and spiders. idk what it is, maybe the fact they go into the dirtiest and nastiest places, so maybe it's just how disgusting they are. As a kid I was scared of the dark, but I grew out of that when I started to prefer going to bed in pitch darkness. As long as I have sound, I can sleep like a baby. I don't like when it's too quiet, hate hearing my own heartbeat or breathing, so a fan. I've tried listening to

Other than that, I have your typical phobias of going to the doctors, or the dentist. What about you though? I understand if you don't want to share all of them. I haven't told some of my friends my phobias because I don't want to risk them doing pranks on me involving mine.

Do you agree with DRM on games?

DRM is something I can't stand. For those wondering what DRM is, it's basically a security measure in video games, where it will often only allow people to play if there is an internet connection. So if there is no internet, you won't be able to play the game. That's not all though, in the past, (idk about now), some DRM only allowed you to play that game on up to 3 machines only, and I think it would render the game useless afterwards. I'm not 100% sure if that is valid, but it's what I heard.

I found that the new Alan Wake remastered also has DRM, as in you can't play the game offline. I had issued with internet the other day and found I couldn't play the game because it required I have internet. Now, Alan Wake is a single player game, with no online mechanics whatsoever. So I don't get why they require an online connection, just seems wrong to me, considering I paid for the game, I should be able to play it even when it's not connected to the web.

Anyway, that's not all, DRM is known to cause issues with performance. As well, I remember some new releases in the past were down because there was DRM issues.

It's not consumer friendly to do this to gamers.

Are you open to new brands?

I think for most of us, we tend to have a few brands that we like and stick with for our tech needs. I was like this for a long time. I was always an LG, Samsung, or HP gal and wouldn't buy anything be it a phone, monitor, TV, screen, tablet, or whatever that wasn't any of those brands. I started branching out when I researched more and read reviews. I have found that most brands get some things right and some things wrong so it is a balancing act. I am not afraid to try a new brand these days when it comes to tech-related items but I will research the item itself and the brand before I spend my money.

How many is too many?

In terms of someone's sexual body count, how many is too many for you to lose interest?

A friend of mine stuck to a rule of keeping it under 10 and she still does manage to find men who have only been with single digits but I feel like some might be lying to her, who knows. I haven't been with a lot of dudes and I don't want to be with a dude who has been dipping his johnson from here to Timbuktu. That is me. I have standards for myself.
