Something Enormous Just Slammed Into Jupiter

Some planets take a lot of hits for us.
Jupiter, the largest gas giant in the solar system, was just slammed by an asteroid, according to an initial tweet from ESA Operations.
As the strongest gravitational force next to the sun, this isn't that uncommon. But it serves to remind us that, while the Earth isn't moving in a shooting gallery of apocalyptic asteroids, asteroid detection technology must continue to expand, lest one day we awake to learn it's the last any of us will ever live before an extinction-level impact.

Jupiter gets punched in the face a lot

On September 13, 2021, at roughly 6:39 PM EDT, amateur astronomers monitored and recorded a colossally bright flash of what seemed to be an impact on Jupiter. Harald Paleske of Germany was recording the shadow of Jupiter's moon, Io, as it passed in front of the planet. But other astronomers involved included José Luis of Brazil, Michel Jacquesson and Jean-Paul Arnould in France, Simone Gelelli of Italy, and Didier Walliang and Alexis Desmougin of the Société Lorraine d'Astronomie, also on France. Many also filmed the event, and suspect an impact on Jupiter.

While still unconfirmed, the putative event would mark only the eighth impact witnessed on Jupiter since the initial impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1994, which disintegrated into separate parts as Jupiter's immense tidal forces ripped it open, transforming the singular asteroid into a rapid-fire event of glorious mayhem. Sadly, no one on Earth was able to see the explosions, since the impacts happened on Jupiter's far side. But a 7.2-ft (2.2-m) Hawaii-based telescope photographed the heat signatures of each impact site as they swiveled into view. The Hubble Space Telescope also snapped grim pictures of the dark, bruise-colored smears strewn beneath the clouds, aptly named "scars."

NASA is upgrading Earth's planetary defense against NEOs

As of writing, scientists are unsure how often Jupiter is impacted by something so massive or high-velocity that it generates an impact flash we can see from Earth, but the consensus is it's fairly often; between 20 and 60 times every year. If the Earth experienced significant impacts with the same frequency, its surface might look very different, and so would whatever survived. But luckily, Jupiter's unconscionably strong gravitational field is gigantic, and accelerates incoming meteorites to unkind speeds, multiplying the kinetic energy of the incoming bodies by several orders of magnitude, which is proportional to the level of energy released upon impact (think of how baseballs hurt more if they slam into you with greater speed).

But Jupiter doesn't take every cosmic hit headed Earth's way. Some scientists suspect we're overdue for another asteroid impact of a similar scale to the one that spelled doom for the dinosaurs. These happen once every 50 to 60 million years. Lucky for us, NASA gave the green light for a new space telescope, called the Near-Earth Object Surveyor (NEO Surveyor), in June. And it's designed to upgrade Earth's planetary defense network by detecting cosmic bodies with potentially dangerous orbital trajectories. "[W]e think there are about 25,000 NEOs large enough to wipe out an area like Southern California," said NEO Survey Project Leader Amy Mainzer in a statement from the University of Arizona. "Once they get bigger than about 450 feet in diameter, they can cause severe regional damage. We want to find these, and as many smaller ones as possible." This could take a few years to launch, and we have other means of detecting NEOs. But whenever a monumental impact flashes from the cloud tops of Jupiter, remember: That might have been us.

Do you have any horror stories involving the police?

The police are supposed to serve and protect, but it seems like it's the opposite when it comes to the black community. With the constant news about cops murdering black men and women, like it's nothing. It's happening so much, that I do worry everytime I see a cop drive by.

I've been stopped by the police a couple times, thankfully nothing ever came of it. They were always chill with me, and respectful, but I know not all cops are out there to get you. But, I still worry about the corrupt ones who are still on the force. Because, dude, they're out there and are probably getting away with murder on a daily basis.

Anyway, have you ever experienced bad treatment from a police officer? And if so, how did it affect you overall?

Could you date a famous person?

Do you think you could date a famous person? I would totally be down to date Rihanna or Beyonce. Of course there's absolutely no chance in hell that would ever happen to me, but hey, a guy can dream. Anyway, if that chance ever presented itself, and you could date a famous person, would you?

Honestly, I'm 50/50 on it, because one part, it could be great and the life from it could be fun. But, I don't think I can handle being any bit famous, because I don't want to deal with paparazzi, or deal with fans storming my girlfriend. If dating someone famous was the same as any other relationship, I'd probably be more into it. But, the idea that you'll probably be on the news, in magazines and so on. And I can't see myself enjoying that.

Do you think that Mario movie will be any good?

They released the cast for it. I am not sure how I feel about it. I grew up playing Mario as a kid and have so many fond memories of the different games on the different consoles. I still go back and play the old school ones. I did watch that live actions Mario movie they did back in the '90s and it was so bad... But honestly, similar to the Mortal Kombat movies, I enjoyed it for what it was. Maybe that was just my kid brain.

I am hoping this movie does good. It won't be live-action like the other one. Maybe they learned their lesson. I don't think I will watch it until the reviews are out on it though.

What do you think about MLMs?

I know one of yall aunties sold mary kay or avon or amway, have any of you? I've thought about doing it but I can't pay someone to sell for them it doesnt make sense. I've been hooked on Lu La Rich about the clothing MLM for white soccer moms.

Any of yall watch this? Home girl on there talking about she dont wanna be on a boat with a bunch of white people. sanaalathanlaugh

Getting back together after a breakup?

I'd like to say I'm the type that doesn't go back to a relationship when it's over, but that would be a lie lol It hasn't gone that way with every relationship I've been in, but I have had one where it became complicated towards the end. We eventually ended things for good, but it took a lot of back and forth to get there. Looking back, it feels like there was a lot of wasted time and energy on something that was crumbling, but I guess it's easy to look back and say that lol

Omni VR treadmill

Okay, so I bet you guys have heard of this, the Omni treadmill controller has been around for a while now, but it's been paired with VR in recent years and it's essentially become the way to game in VR for some games. I want to try VR on this thing. It looks like they changed the name to KatVR though. And I can't see a price, as they will quote you a price instead. So maybe it's custom built based on your specifications?

I wish I could afford to get my hands on a device like this, but this is probably more geared towards an arcade setting.

Loaning money to friends

Oh damn dude, who here has loaned money to a friend in need? I have only done it once and I regretted it. He of course is one of my childhood friends, but we've kinda lost touch in recent years. But, he can contact me whenever he needs a handout. And honestly I helped him with the understanding that he'd pay me back. But he took forever to pay me. I wasn't even asking for payments, just a little here and and a little there. The dude has the gall to then ask me months later if I could foot the bill for one of our meals when we hung out. And in fact, I asked the dude right there if he had any money to pay back.

I only intend to loan money to my mom and that's it, no one else is getting my help from here on out. Friends may mean well, but don't let em take advantage of you either.

Syracuse, N.Y. – New York may recruit medical workers from the Philippines, other countries and states to replace unvaccinated staff at hospitals and nursing homes who face being fired if they don’t get Covid-19 vaccine shots by Monday.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said today that’s one strategy her administration may pursue if New York sees a significant exodus of health care workers as a result of the Covid-19 vaccination mandate.

nder the mandate, health care workers must get at least one dose of the vaccine by Monday. If they don’t, the state won’t let them do their jobs, and hospitals and nursing homes can fire them.

State data shows 17% of nursing home and 16% of hospital workers remain unvaccinated.
