Introduction: Although I had accidentally bought this vest in a size that didn't fit me, It still works really well because there are two velcro straps at the back of it that make sure you can still wear it comfortably. There is no protection for the sides. The only part of the suit that is still covered but is easy to stab through as it does not contain protective metal plates is the very top of of the suit that leads up to the neck, this is true for the front and back of the vest.
Front part: I think the chest area does not contain metal plates but the material is pretty thick as there is a big front pocket for placing an abundance of small items into. The stomach is of course protected by metal plates. The plates are very protective even if a Racist or fellow POW was to stab you with a small chef's knife, it would most likely hurt themselves more as when I tried stabbing through it with both hands, I almost dislocated my right wrist.
Back part: The entire back of the vest is protected.
Metal plates work against: Chef knives and bread knives.
Slice-proof gloves: The gloves that come with a bag to hold the vest in (along with a small two-page pamphlet written entirely in "so-called Asian" writing) are SLICE-PROOF NOT STAB-PROOF. The material within them is comprised of metal wires, my left glove had a metal wire sticking out at the wrist area which scraped my skin a couple of times until I noticed what the problem was.
Overall impression: The stab-proof vest does its job against predictable attacks such as chest stabs and stomach stabs. The slice-proof gloves are useful if you are handling sharp objects for example if you were to dig into a plastic package that had sharp edges with both hands while wearing the gloves, you would not get hurt so I'd imagine that if you put your hands into a box of unprotected knives, you would not be hurt either.
