Now days, cable TV is pretty much dying out. With everyone watching streamers on Twitch, or people on YouTube, plus all of the many streaming platforms, it feels like cable tv is an afterthought. Do you guys even feel the need for cable tv anymore? I haven't had cable tv in probably 2 years now. I have my Netflix, hulu, youtube, twitch and a few other streaming platforms that I use, but other than that, I haven't watched a cable program much in the last 2 years.

With that being said, how much longer does cable tv have? I know some of them have gone to streaming, as charter spectrum has their own thing going, and I know there Sling TV and YouTube has tv now along with Hulu and some other services.

What I am saying is this. I think everything will be streamed in the coming years. Cable TV will end up dying out, and content will be exclusive to their own streaming platforms.

I like the options when it comes to streaming. Because I can subscribe to a couple services and be good, and still have money left over. Cable is just too damn expensive compared to getting maybe Hulu and Netflix. If I really want to as well, I can sub for a month to other services and then cancel right after. Cable, you're locked into a year or more agreement, and are often charged for wanting to cancel early.

But yeah, I think cable is headed out and streaming is going to exclusively take over.

I was an Telecom Engineer for a looooong time and I remember back in 2010, we were hemorrhaging so many customers that if we netted an increase of only 1 subscriber in a year it’d be considered a success. Two major things are whooping Cable TV’s rear end….

    • Content Costs - Content providers like HBO, Showtime, CBS, etc are constantly raising their rates year over year which is killing Cable company margins.
    • The Internet - More and more people by the day are getting their entertainment “over the top” which means through the internet so with Netflix and Hulu there’s less need to get cable. This has also made a lane for the content providers to distribute the content directly to the consumer bypassing the cable company entirely. \
    • Changing Viewership Patterns - The internet ushered in an on-demand world which is now the preferred method of watching content. People want to watch the show they want, when they want, they don’t want to have to wait a particular time or date to be able to access the content.
To counteract this, Cable companies have been pricing their packages like Burger King Combo…TV + Internet = $100, Internet only = $80.00 to entice people to opt for the TV option too. I think in the end we won’t see it die wholesale but most large providers will migrate to over the top options and forego a lot of the legacy video content delivery equipment they historically have used.

Cable is dying so slowly that we will be in our 90s when she loses her luster.

You cannot beat a monopoly in the traditional manner. Cable companies have whole counties under contract.
We’ll never replace Telco/Cable for internet without an Act of Congress but their TV delivery services can definitely die out.

I think it'll continue to die out or they'll adapt and switch to streaming like Spectrum. I wish I could get rid of it but my provider has the internet and tv bundled together. When I looked into getting rid of the tv portion, it was going to sky rocket my internet bill.
Yeah that's what a lot of them are already doing. It's a smart move on their part, but then that creates like cable 2.0, where eventually a service will come out where it combines certain streaming services. I bet we'll see something like that down the line. With every network having their own streaming platform now, I can see some company coming in to do a cable like service where you can select a few streaming services for one set cost. But idk.

Oh they do, but with streaming services, people are dropping cable left and right. The only downside is that a lot of the cable providers also provide internet, so who knows if that will be affected further if streaming continues to take over.

Yup, the internet is a key one, especially when it is easy for most to find programming for free on the web. Plus with the popularity of streaming and Youtube increasing, I can see those even surpassing cable tv.

My father got cable tv about a year ago, and it is exactly how you mentioned. Package deals that include cable tv, internet and phone. Hell spectrum even has a mobile service now and they tried to get him on that too.

Oh for sure, we unfortunately need them for internet. Cable tv as we know it is dying, but the internet is continually expanding and growing. Plus, not having to deal with commercials every few minutes is nice.
