When it comes to buying gifts for lovers, friends, or family - how do you view it? (for birthdays, Christmas, and other special occasions)

Do you think there should be an agreeance on what to spend? Should gift-giving come from the heart and money not matter? What about buying gifts for people who don't always get you something?

I usually try to give at least a small gift to friends, and I'll give something bigger to closer friends and family. I try to set a maximum amount on what to spend but I don't always follow it lol
I like to stick to a $25 rule for friends and siblings (not going over that) and then spend $50 on each parent as a minimum. I will spend more if I have the money though. My grandparents are no longer with us but I spent around $35 on each of them when they were. I used to spend like $450 each year but I am learning to shop smarter. I will find stuff on sale and get more for my money.
