Sony is buying Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2 and the studio that originally created Halo, in a deal worth $3.6 billion, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Monday.

Bungie will remain a multiplatform studio — Destiny 2 is available on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms — with the option to self-publish its games. The studio “will remain independent and multi-platform, will enjoy creative freedom, and their track record in developing massively successful franchises in the sci-fi shooter genre will be highly complementary to SIE’s own IP portfolio,” SIE president Jim Ryan explained in a statement.

“We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games,” Pete Parsons, CEO and chairman of Bungie, added in a statement. “We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.”

Bungie addressed concerns from the Destiny 2 player base in an FAQ about the new deal, promising that nothing will change about the game’s availability on existing platforms. In a graphic outlining Bungie and PlayStation’s “shared vision,” Bungie said:

  • Destiny 2 will stay on all current platforms and expand to new platforms”
  • “Bungie maintains full creative control and publishing independence of the Destiny universe”
  • “Same game, everywhere — Every player should have an amazing Destiny experience, no matter where you choose to play”
Parsons said of the deal: “In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.”

I never thought I'd see this happen in a million years.

Both Company are going to acquire a Japanese studio next especially Microsoft who wants a bigger foot in Japan
Sony has the home field advantage there though... Microsoft can WANT all day long but it'll be an uphill battle for them. I would be interested though to see who Sony goes for first though(Konami or Square Enix, for example). I would imagine Microsoft would wind up with the left over. But I can also imagine Sony swinging a big dick, so-to-speak, and taking them both.

I knew that Microsoft was purchasing Activision, but I knew nothing about Sony purchasing Bungie Studios. I'm a PlayStation fan but in all honesty, I've never been a big fan of Halo or Destiny 2. I'm sure others would disagree and say that those games are some of the best, but I feel like this was just a way for Sony to get publicity. Sony can't let another competitor make a big purchase and gain publicity, they have to do it too. It's all about competition.

Sony and Microsoft (as well as Nintendo) are going to eat up as much as they can. They want to have complete control. This is a problem. This will only do what these suits did to music. They will make it all feel and sound the same and they will cripple creativity in the long run.
If Sony had the opportunity to buy up Activision-Blizzard, I believe they would without thinking twice about it. But the case in the company took all by surprise and Microsoft went under and pulled off a major steal.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if Sony would have been able to afford buying Activision Blizzard for almost $70 billion even if they wanted to acquire the company, their financial strength can't pull it off. It's why they had to look at getting Bungie.

It's a good thing for Sony to acquire a few more studios of their own because how Microsoft have been going lately, it's very obvious that they are trying to take charge of monopoly in the industry. I read their other that Sony purchased Nixxes Software as well that works on porting console games to PC as well.
