Lol I don't want to ruin your thread, but this is Smokey Robinson from a few years back defending Jennifer Lopez's culture vulture ass headlining that weak ass Motown Tribute at an awards show.

    Coon Talk:

    View: https://mobile.twitter.com/variety/status/1094443662405029888

That wasn't coon talk; the Motown sound was huge; there were no lies told. It sounded like Smokey was bigging up the reach that Motown had. I don't think he was caping for Jennifer Lopez. Smokey Robinson has always been talking that Black ish, he's certified.

Now Ja Rule defending J-Lo singing the n-word? That was coon talk.

Rollie it is coon talk, he said “anyone who is intelligent isn’t upset” meaning that if you didn’t like a Hispanic singing at tribute to Black American music, you’re stupid. That’s coon talk if I ever heard it.

I know what he said, and I was angry when he said it. I get your point.
However, after listening again, this isn't Smokey giving J-Lo a hood pass (like Ja Rule & Diddy did, or like Nas & Jay-Z gave Gwynneth Paltrow). This ain't that.
That was Smokey giving his blessing for a white hispanic to pay homage to the iconic company and sound that he helped create.
He's right, too. EVERYBODY of all ethnicities should bow down & pay homage to us! The whole world should be kissing the FBA ring.
Like I said, I was angry too when I initially heard that snippet years ago, but Smokey has been unapologetically Black longer than most of us have been alive.
Could Smokey have expressed himself more clearly? Sure.
Was he cooning? I can't honestly put that jacket on him.

He put the comfort of a Puerto Rican over the comfort of Black Americans. That's coon shit.

He said "Motown was music for everyone" he basically "All Lives Mattered" us.

So while I semi-agree with him on The View he did coon it up for J-Lo when she wouldn't have done the same for a nigga at the Latin Grammys.

He said we were stupid for being upset at a Puerto Rican performing at a tribute to Black American music. When you frame it like you did it looks like kissing the ring but that isn't the reality. When we let these people in our mix they take our creations and then act like we never existed. There's white and asian kids listening to Rap in Fortnite and don't even know we made it because people like Smoke Robinson cape for our erasure.

If he simply disagreed and said "I don't think people should be upset" that would be one thing but he called us stupid. That's Jim Clyburn talk right there. Instead of hearing us out he said "Stop sloganizing".

This a tough one I don't see why ART had to throw a grenade in what seemed to be an innocent thread.

    usher laugh

I'm with Rollie Forbes on Smokie Robinson having a track record of Black pride but on the flip side we seen niggas switch up in old age so. Is he a coon? I don't know. Did that nigga cape for J-Lo, yes. Is that a strike on his B1 record? Yes. I'm not loyal to niggas I'm loyal to my interests, J-Lo performing at a Black ceremony ain't got a damn thing to do with my interests. I would sleep quite well if I didn't see one Puerto Rican singing Black American music, I don't need them. Black people gave White Hispanics one drum beat and they riding that shit into the dirt. I wish Shabba never came out with Dembow.

I totally agree with you here! This old Nigga (we can't trust these old Niggas) is simply trying to jump on the bandwagon of Blk empowered at the very last minute to gain a few brownie points with the B1 family. This guy has a decades long history of cooning it out at the drop of a hat for some butter biscuits from the dominant society so no saying a few pretty words when he's got one foot in the grave doesn't negate all the damage that he's done to the B1 over the years. Remember, coons really can't change (or very rarely do) and I don't think he even believes what he is saying here.

Puerto Rican music or that Urbano Reggaetón whatever they call it use that Dembow beat and rhythm on every. single. fucking. song. they make. Nice beat, but all these Reggaetón songs have the same exact beat to where every song becomes repetitive and redundant. It really shows their lack of creativity.

    Look at this:
"When Shabba Ranks released "Dem Bow" in 1990, it did not take long for the dembow genre to form. Riddims were built from the song and the sound became a popular part of reggaeton. From the original song of "Dem Bow" produced by Steely & Clevie, it then reached New York, and eventually the Dominican Republic.[3][4]"

Shabba Ranks needs to be getting nothing but royalties for all these mfers eating off his work.

Just as a reminder, the black baby boomers' whole mission were to out white the whites... Meaning, they took pride in the reach that Motown had and wanted to integrate and have babies with good hair, etc... I think Smokey partook in the fuckery and enjoyed the fruits (regardless of how rotten they were), but in his older age I believe he's gained (just a lil) more knowledge of self. He probably still believes in the black and brown coalition! Old niggas are confused. Why else would he make that gang banging song?!?!?

You preaching Sis. Even him saying “I like being a Black American” sounds coonish because he wants to be adjacent to massah rather than those negros in Africa.

The issue is that if you take dembow off it will be straight up rap. Reggaeton aint even a drama to me, it’s spicy rap.
