Random Thought: I Notice My Reality Now Drives My Decision Making In My RPG Adventures

I started a new game of Skyrim today and it made me think about my RPG decision-making. I realized, when I first started playing Skyrim, way back on PS3, I always sided with the Stormcloaks even though they were prejudice against non-Nords; because at the end of the day, I felt some kind of way about the Empire telling them what Gods they could and couldn't worship. Freedom of Religion is something I strongly stand by. So I said Fuck The Imperials.

However, after a reality TV Actor was appointed to the Presidency in 2016, I started siding with the Imperials, because the Stormcloaks started to remind me of his supporters and Ulfric started to remind me of the newly appointed president. I can disagree with a person's politics up until that person's politics requires my life and the quality of it be diminished in any capacity. So then I said Fuck The Stormcloaks.

But now, here I am, a year removed from my most recent playthrough, and I'm back to siding with the Stormcloaks, again.
Racist as they may be, the Imperials are forcing the people to accept another group's criteria of what a god is or isn't as normal. All because this other group, the Thalmor, are up in their feelings about who should and shouldn't be considered a Divine. Y'know like how these perverts today, are trying to tell other people what the criteria of Woman and Man are, and letting these people have access to women's restrooms, and sports, and accepting drag shows as "family functions". Meanwhile the government allows it, because they're too afraid to fight back. So again I return to Fuck The Imperials.

Now clearly neither group is good. And really neither group should be supported in real life, but this is a video game and not real life and in that context, I find it a bit interesting that at any given moment, BOTH sides at different points in my life with different events transpiring managed to win the "Lesser of Two Evils" argument for me. For what it's worth, that's....weirdly, pretty neat and oddly impressive given how old this game is. In addition to my many hang-ups with Bethesda, I give them credit for, haphazardly, creating that kind of dichotomy.

Alrighty, that's my thought to ponder for today. Everybody enjoy the rest of your Sunday and Have a great upcoming week this week.

It’s why I can’t do multiple play throughs in RPGs because I can’t stop being me.

I'm feel you. I was like that at first when I was younger. As I got older and leaned into being a trophy hunter/completionist type of gamer, I'm better at separating the mission of the trophy/trophies, from my personal feelings.

I noticed my style of playing through games like this changed over the years too but I am somehow more like I was when I was in my mid teens than my early to mid 20s. The older I get, I think I just find myself playing in a style that I used to have less worries about without even realizing it. I have even gotten into games again I had not touched since my teens.

I am just going back and playing games like Fable, Assassins Creed, etc. Games that came out like 10 to 15 years ago. A lot of them I played but I have a new appreciation for them cause most of the games they make these days just suck. Like sure, they look pretty but they feel empty. And my younger bro got me into Minecraft of all things. I been playing that on a few servers with him and a few of his friends. It is a good chill game when I want something mindless and creative.

You remember that Viva Pinata game from like 2006? I ended up playing that again too. I had not played that since I was a young kid. It is so relaxing though. I miss how gaming used to make me feel I think.

I am hoping the next GTA game isn't a bust cause I do miss playing those games. GTA V got ruined for me cause I played on PC online and it was nothing but hackers and racists. So fn annoying.

I feel you! I played a little bit of GTA online, but ultimately I gave that up in exchange for Red Dead Online. If Rockstar had managed that more maybe I would have stayed engaged. I've been playing PayDay 2 lately and then Fortnite and WarFrame. You REALLY need to play with us on Sunday Night Shootout. We usually play Fortnite (because Jay doesn't know any other game aside from Breath of the Wild, Sonic and Pokémon lol I joke I joke). We WIN..... A LOT.

Oh yeah, I was playing WarFrame again too. I used to play on PC but since I got an Xbox, been playing on there. Got burned out so I am taking a break. I am not really into Fortnite. I tried. It just didn't stick with me. I enjoyed Apex for a minute but that lost its luster for me too. It seems like most free games just don't last for me. I seldom play online games anymore. I was going to get that last CoD but changed my mind.

Same. I can only stay engaged if I'm playing with friends (Like Fortnite and Warframe) But I don't mind playing with randoms on heist games like PayDay2.

This is totally me on Fallout and any game where I can make a decision on who to side with. My moral compass cannot allow me to side with people who I wouldn’t FW in real life.

Sometimes like you stated you are in lesser of two evils situations and have to pick a side to progress the story but you go with the one closest to you. It’s why I don’t like games that present choices but then lead you down to a pre designed path anyways.

If I make a choice it is intentional and I want the story to reflect the choice I make. Fallout 4 sucked at this and was basically on rails narratively….the dialogue options were essentially “throw a middle finger up while on the train” or “give a thumbs up while on the train”. No matter what you picked it didn’t matter.

I agree. The only thing that was "your choice". Was do you side with your "son", or go with the Railroad, the Brotherhood of Steel or the Minutemen. Because I know the game is Platinum-able I'll replay it for that purpose but when you compare a game like Fallout 4 with a game like Detroit:Become Human or Until Dawn where your decisions REALLY impact the story. The experience is night and day.
