She was unjustly hung. She was not allowed to stand her ground or defend herself as Black slaves had zero rights. To this very day, we still barely have our rights respected in the 21 century.
It was a jury of white slave owners and a racist prosecutor that was heavily responsible for this. Meanwhile, the murderers of Black people like Emmett Till were acquitted in mid-late 20th century.

Supreme Court ruled against Celia in her appeal. In their December 14 order, the state justices said they "thought it proper to refuse the prayer of the petitioner," having found "no probable cause for her appeal." The stay of execution, the justices wrote, is "refused."
Celia was interviewed for a final time in her cell on the evening before her execution. Again, she denied that "anyone assisted her...or abetted her in any way." She told her interrogator, as reported in the
Fulton Telegraph, "as soon as I struck him the Devil got into me, and I struck him with a stick until he was dead, and then rolled him into the fire and burnt him up." Celia died on the gallows at 2:30 P.M. on December 21, 1855."
Meanwhile in 2023, you have several white racists like Republican Tennessee legislator Paul Sherrell eager to revive these very same lynching-style hangings to be used on all Black people (code word: criminals / inmates) including who innocent but are denied their innocence.
Nothing has changed with these anti-Black racists, only their tactics of terrorism, dogwhistling, and oppression.
