A number of African countries turn up at election time. I'd say most. I'd say its the norm. I can tell you there are U.S. state department warnings as well as travel sites that will say avoid...take your pick...Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, etc, while an election is being contested.
They don't bother tourists actually. Its an unofficial rule in most countries that tourists aren't part of the election season turn up, but because we are black, we can be mistaken for a civilian at any time. Especially in West Africa because we have a lot of west African DNA.
Jamaica is like that as well. They turn up at election time but the resorts in Ocho Rios, etc are off limits.
