DJ Vlad is 100 percent culture vulture. As far as Busta and this is not an excuse is we all heard the Kool Herc story. Even hip hop head Tariq thought as much. I did, we all did.

I'm sure Busta heard the same thing. If Busta said AFTER hearing it was way before Kool Herc, I'd agree 100 percent. Other than that he was just repeating what was said historically. I assume he's been 'educated' now and if he maintains the Kool Herc narrative then yeah, he's glomming off the culture.

It's strange to me... black people are so proud to claim we are not a monolith, yet every other group is monolithic in their hatred of us. It's a shame that we can't punish Vlad for his behavior. He stayed on code with his people and refused to apologize to Minister Farrakhan. He knew he would find Knee Grows who would support him against their own. That's why I strongly believe in the 1804 treatment.

I was there. I am a Jamaican of a certain age. Acclimated by FBA culture in the Bronx in the early 70's. That means stick ball in the street rainbow icies and Sicilian corners. My mom was one of those people who never dictated who our friends should be. During the NYC black out of 1977 our business was one of the few in the community that did not get vandalized... People loved her. I have the high honor of having seen Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5...Live...of going to Dj Breakout parties in the Edenwald projects...unfortunately immigrants nowadays have become tethers for real. You can thank Hollywood for that. It's why a Korean who never met a black person diaplays hatred. Jamaicans were influential in the development of hip hop but we did not create it. The cultures were separate at that time. Us teenagers at that time moved back and forth between the cultures but Jamaican adults didn't like hip hop until sugarhill. There was no record store in Jamaica where you could find funk records with breaks to mix. Jamaican sound system culture developed simultaneously and they never played hip hop in those early days. Like KRS said you could get your party shot up if u did. Busta has a large platform and owes FBA culture enough to be careful about what he said. Taking bout black Americans don't have no culture. That's past ignorant It played too heavily into this narrative of everyone taking and getting rich off, yet disrespecting FBA culture.

NYC and Miami have the largest Caribbean communities. I spent a lot of time in NYC. Family in Brookyn, moms came out of Harlem, cousins in the Bronx. Took the 2 and 4 out of Brooklyn into the city and had fun, all over.

I will say this. The Jamaican mostly but other Caribbean descended people are well integrated in the Black community and mixed easily with the FBAs there. Hip hop is no different. The rappers of Caribbean descent way back in early hip hop didn't even talk about their heritage because they saw themselves as black and part of the larger black community. One didn't hear Grandmaster Flash, Dougie Fresh, Fat Boys and others who are west Indian rap about it. Special Ed mentioned it once in one of his raps.

As you say, everyone just rocked with everyone and the west Indians openly shared their food culture with FBAs. With very few exceptions there was no difference, everyone intermarried, dated, seemlessly. I grew up the same. You identified more with your hood than your lineage. The rival area, projects was that a rival and it didn't matter if they had Jamaicans or Trinis there. You rode for your peoples. Also, when white supremacy showed its ugly head we all rode.

I will say this. Things changed later, the posse gangs showed up and had all west Indian gangs. Way back in the day, 60s, early to mid 70s, my relatives would tell you that the black Harlem gangs, black Bronx gangs were just that black. There were FBA and non FBA, it was about neighborhood not lineage.

The arrivals from the Caribbean later, were far more cliquish. Miami area was always like that. Some integrated with the Miami FBAs but not nearly as much as NYC did or north Jersey, Philly or Boston. So it depends on the area and era.

To keep it a buck, when the Africans started coming in bigger numbers in the 90s, and later, they stuck to their own pretty much. A few (like Godfrey) integrated, but by and large, no. I have had a discussion about this FBA, non FBA thing with my FBA friends and they said, you'd meet a brother at work or whatever, and if he had a black American accent, you didn't know he was west Indian till after you got know him more and it came out organically, just like if you were originally from a specific area in the south and you met a brotha outside the south and over time you found out y'all family from the same area. They have said, they saw my background as something interesting, but didn't think about it. We shared the same childhood history, were homies and that was the most important and the only thing.

They said its different when Africans, not to shyt on them. They led with their Africanness and it was obvious they werent' tryna mix. Not all. And even the ones who were 2nd generation with no accent were a bit standoffish. The ones that were cool (meaning mixed in and saw themselves as Black as anyone) were the same as Caribbeans of before. Godfrey again comes to mind. He's a regular brotha. His Nigerian ancestry is just a fact and nothing more it doesn't dictate how he looks at you or treats you.

The African brothers I've met and became friends with, for the most part, only did so after a kind of 'trial period'. I am a big fan of soccer these days. A sport I adopted to follow as an adult going a few years back. The Nigerian friends I had gradually accepted me because I knew some of their famous players like Kanu. I met one at work. I was pretty much the only black guy he rocked with and it was I think only because I knew a lot of about Nigeria. I asked him so are you 'Hausa? Yoruba? Ibo? Delta?' and he was shocked I knew that and to him 'Okay, this guy has respect for my culture and country'. He thought I was FBA. I'm physically black like anyone, so I don't lead with anything else because I see all of us, FBA, Caribbean, African as one. Always have, always will. I separate on what code you are on.

I'm in a black frat and met a Somali guy who was in the frat and he looked Somali but rocked like a regular brotha. He said his peoples gave him some shyt about it. But he moved like a regular American brotha. He has a great amount of pride in is heritage as he should, but not in the manner as its better. Same as if I know cats who moved to my area from Virginia or Texas and had pride if some athlete or entertainer came from their town there.

So, for me, to sum it all up, they either saw themselves as part of the larger black community or didn't

The thing is DJ Vlad stayed in line because the Jewish community could punish him by making sure no major artist ever sits down with him again. If a Black person defies the community what can we do? Not a got damn thing. They can actually defy us and make more money than they can ever imagine. That's the true problem at the end of the day. Allegiance doesn't come free. You pay for it or you demand it with violence.

The USA uses both...they pay you to comply with a job or more directly with a government check ...if that doesn't work they get to the physical.

It's amazing how they got this slave master shit locked...world wide...here in Jamaica the face of white supremacy is black. The majority black population is under privileged under educated and exploited.

I NEVER understood why our people allow that racist ass MoFo to interview them in the first place!
It's NOT even a damn interview! Vlad reminds me of a young Phil Donahue, always starting shit, demeaning & throwing shade!

Sis? It has to be some sort of mist as they walk in. Sodium Pentathol that makes them want to just tell EVERYTHING. SMH Valds content has gotten several rappers locked up and by the time they get out? It's going to look like the Jetsons out here.

Vlad got in from wanting white validation. It's one of the things that has hurt us for 400 years because we have been programmed to see then as gods from the plantation. They pushed it and many of bought it.

Many of us are 'Stockholm syndromed' about white folks. We (as a collective) made him a muliti millionaire for free. People came on there for free, people far more famous than him (i.e. Jamie Foxx, etc) but many of the same famous people wouldn't hook up a black podcaster with even a 15 minute interview.

Jason Black said some of these same folks wanted him to pay them but did Vlad for free. I wish I knew who he was talking about. Cancel them mofos.

100% so true. It’s subconscious cooning in a lot of ways. They see the Black community through the same lens as the dominant society so when you come to them they treat you like crap because you’re a lonely negro.

When a white person comes to them they are honored and make space for them. Even doing something pro bono is seen as a come up because they are being validated by even being approached.
