I noticed that a lot of the civil rights generation are computer illiterate. Lots of them don't have access to the information due to this computer illiteracy. They only get their information from CNN and MSNBC. (Which I call Caucasian News Network and MZUNGU SELL OUT NEWS BY CAUCASIANS). I Was recently educating my dad on lots of things and most of it he had no clue about.

DO THE GEN XERS AND MILLENNIALS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO TRY TO KEEP THE OLDER CIVIL RIGHTS GENERATION EDUCATED?

in the age of information, ignorance is a choice.

If they really wanted to, they could figure it out themselves. But they don't want to. They know how much available information is on the internet. Most of them have cell phones and are on Facebook. They hear their kids and grandkids talking. They know the information their offspring are discovering now. How it highlights and magnifies how severely THEIR generation dropped the ball following Malcolm's and Martin's assassinations. Them hearing about all the ways the Democratic party screwed us in the past and continue to do so now but meanwhile they dogmatically continue to vote for them. Them hearing about how black families have no generational wealth, how we have no real tangibles to and for our families' names, Brings to light how debaucherous, fast and loose they were with themselves and our futures.

They don't need to be educated on anything, because they know they shoulder some blame of how and why we as a community stagnated in our progress against white supremacy. THEY had an obligation to secure OUR futures and decided they just wanted to have access to White people and their spaces instead.

Tariq Nasheed and Jason Black both have said on numerous occasions, these old niggas can't be trusted.

The ones that genuinely want to get on code with us, should absolutely be helped and educated and brought up to speed.

The ones that want to stay dead set on business as usual, let them go. They're dead weight.

I partially agree with you. I do believe the older generations failed us in a lot of ways. I do believe some of them are also being ignorant willfully. I see that all the time.

I even agree with you about the some of them when you try to talk to them they'll just start talking about Jesus Democrats and praying.

However there are some of them that are genuinely lost and they don't want to be or need to be. They are open to information when it is given to them and they are willing to change their ways.

Those are the ones that we need to be targeting and trying to get on code. As much as it pisses us off we can't just write off all of them.

In order to get where we need to be we need as many of us on code as possible and that means unity. Even with the people that we are upset with.

Those that when you try to talk to them they just are talking about prayer and Bible thumping then those people are lost. Those that when you try to tell them about voting in a different way just keep harping on Democrats they are lost. This group you will never get to don't worry about them.

Try to get that group that is willing to change. You are more likely to win or war when you have more soldiers.

If you have soldiers that just don't have a gun then give them the gun. And this case these soldiers just don't have information so we just need to give them the information. Those are when you try to reach them the gun (information) they rejected then leave them on a battlefield alone.

I'm not so much worried about those that are purposely trying to sell us out. I'm more worried about those who are lost and don't even realize it.

Do we have the responsibility to educate them or do they have the obligation to educate themselves?

You used the analogy of a solider without a gun and it makes sense. But think about a soldier in a war zone, taking fire, and it never dawns on them to find a gun…you think that’s a solider?

If the basically element of self survival doesn’t kick in then is it our duty to educate them? I understand the need to educate but the second an old person gives me that old ideology in the face of all that has happened I charge them to the game.

Do you need the internet to see that you are being replaced? How did Malcolm and Martin ever figure it out without the internet?

Agreed, the children and grandchildren of the Klan are all fundamentally Christian, Jared Taylor and even Richard Spencer himself said to Bowlin Ball Martin's face that he was a "Cultural Christian". I like quoting this bit of literature for context sake; 1 John 4:20 If anyone says, I love God, and hates a brother or sister, he is a liar.

I have mixed feelings about this 1. Educating people, and more specifically, educating people about computer literacy is a good thing. Computer literacy courses abound in most municipalities in America at Public Libraries, Community Colleges, Senior Centers, etc. Most of these are free or either have a reduced cost for seniors. And there can never be enough education regarding basic fundamentals of R,R,R as well as Nutritional habits, financial literacy, parenting, etc. That being said, yes more should be done to educate aging citizens and this simply reflects the attitude of the Status Quo, whom I think we can all agree is a worthy opponent. I have associations with several 70+ Quarkers & they are all computer literate. Many White contemporaries of the Civil Rights generation are computer literate. To wrap this up I will say that MUCH, not all, but yet a great deal of the fault for this “Lapse in Continuing Ed” in the Black community, especially amongst the lower financial strata is due in many instances to the lack of involvement by the Black Church, and this failure is glaring. People tend to be most malleable if they are in their comfort zone, and these churches should & can do more in this 1 aspect in their immediate communities. However I can safely assume that any examples of “Continuing Ed” for seniors in the Black Church, while they undoubtedly exist, are few and far between. Here in the RTP I know that many churches in Durham and perhaps Raleigh, do a great job of providing schooling on the “front end” for the community. Tracy Mcgrady is an example & product of one such school. And while there is much strong word in the street about these primary schools, I rarely hear anything about educational outreach for seniors. So as it regards literacy I think the question begs itself “Should we expect accountability from the Black Church in doing more to educate it’s Senior members; Yes. Beyond immediate family, while many of us don’t have the time to achieve such efforts, most would say we aren’t expected to do so.

As it regards to political action & challenging the status quo, again beyond immediate family I personally say NO. The talking points regarding Reparations are already in the media & on peoples minds & the tips of their tongues. So my position as well as a few others I encountered in a “Twitter Space” a few nights ago is to try and add momentum to this phenomenon. Simply stated myself and a few others believe that this
“Snowflake” of info can gain momentum and has the potential to grow into a Snowball simply by going out on Sundays and “laying down flyers on cars of church members and carpeting the parking lots of random or targeted churches. There is a lot more involved than what is being said here, which mostly centers around the most “effective” graphics; the intention of which is to evoke & appeal to the sympathies on behalf of the seniors for the youth & children, etc. So personally, I am trying to educate in that manner simply by planting a seed, which if nothing else will definitely cause the members to ask and question each other about the origin of the communique and it’s talking points. Engaging people about the rights & wrongs of reparations, voting patterns, etc is not my concern in this endeavor. I simply again am concerned about gaining momentum and creating persistent debate, talk and growth of the message on the street. the church is the largest gathering and Congress of the Civil Rights generation. If promoted effectively they can be bold. Mike Bloomberg can attest to this.😂😂

Why are you presuming there be an unwillingness to educate individuals of previous generations? I would posit that what you are experiencing is not an unwillingness to provide education but rather an unwillingness to backtrack. If you are in a sprint, when the baton is passed do you ponder on the status of the teammate who passed the baton to you? No. You focus on the track ahead of you to ensure you remain competitive.

What we have seen in Black America is a forceful ripping of the baton from the hands of the previous generations. What we initially saw as a half-baked effort was later identified as full on sabotage and so this is the end result. If some of the older generations want to run the race with us it they can be our guest. But they are running it on our terms or they will be forced into the stands.

We cannot teach old dogs new tricks.

I think my experience is just a bit different than most everyone on this thread. Lots of the older people in my family seem to be more open to information and more accepting to information when it's given. So if they are willing to learn I'm most certainly willing to teach.

Now don't get me wrong I do know those few old people most of these are not family they're just friends who will not listen they are stuck in their ways and when you try to teach them they just come back at you with CNN (Caucasian News Network) talking points.

Those people I'm not even going to waste my time with.

I may have been a tad obtuse or verbose. No one is anti-old head at least on this site. We agree that educating the community is our obligation but the adolescents are weighted higher than the elders.

Some people in this thread seem pretty pissed at the old heads and have written them off completely. I can't do that. The older people in my circle have been good to me.

They are just misinformed and that is not their fault for the most part.

I can agree that information is out there and it can be found if you just look for it. I just can't get past the fact that lots of the older generation are computer illiterate. And yes there are places that you can go to get computer literacy training if you're in a big city.

The issue I find is that I grew up in a very rural area. So the same things that are available in a large metropolitan area like where I live now are not available back home to my family.

So I can't just write the older people off because they're misinformed when the tools to get the information aren't necessarily available to them.

We can agree to disagree but I believe the anger to be righteous. An anger that is necessary to course correct. You’re seeing a generation of Black people who are versed in the words of a King, X, Washington, Carmichael, Welsing and are looking at their elders who decided to take a differing route.

A route that has led them to a 2030 where their median income will be ZERO. You’re seeing a shifting in the collective conscience of Black America which might I add does not discount or negate your anecdotes. You can have elders in your family who are B1 while also understanding why the community is splintering.

People are making observations and seeing how our current plight is directly attached to the decisions of those who came before us. To those who called Malcolm a radical or to those who felt King was off track when he spoke to our economic plight.

That generation deserveths alleth of the smoke.

I'm a Millennial and my husband as Gen X and most of the people he interacts with are from the baby boomers or older (his mother, my mother-in-law is 75). I find myself teaching my husband all the time. I'm the one who introduced him to the New Black Media. I'd say yes if they really want to be educated (like my husband) but no if they don't (like almost everyone else around us over 40). I wouldn't even try if I feel like they aren't interested that includes technology. Sometimes you just can't teach a old dog new tricks.

I'm 40 and I have always been for black empowerment. I have occasionally found that I need to be careful who I follow because there are those like Roland Martin who have nefarious intent.

My dad is 78. He doesn't use the internet at all other than Facebook occasionally. But he barely even knows how to use that. Once I explain to him how a lot of his favorite politicians are corrupt like Stacy Abrams, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Jim Clyburn, Elizabeth Warren, and even Joe Biden and that a lot of his favorite media personalities had to be listened to cautiously and usually only gave part of the story and avoided speaking the truth about the corruption and would not criticize Democrats even even they should he was surprised.

He listened to the information and is able to make wiser decisions now!

I think that the younger generation can take some blame too. I see that on social media you can post something meaningful whether about politics or something else and it barely gets any views or responses.

You post she garbage that doesn't really matter whether it be something funny or something like that Will Smith BS and it gets a ton of responses.

If you post something that requires then to read for a few minutes no responses but if you post a picture a ton of responses.

People in general are just lazy. But maybe that's just my experience.
