Say you are in a relationship with someone who accounts for at least half the income and means of finances for you both and they lose their job. Maybe they were fired, maybe the company shut down, maybe there were budget cuts. Either way, they are no longer employed and their income was needed to cover a lot of you and your partner's financial needs.

How would you handle this?

Depends on if he/she is a wife/husband or just boyfriend/girlfriend.

I've been in that situation and we just adjusted the way we lived until we had 2 incomes again.
The 2 things I don't do in a relationship is argue over money or family. I know times get rough but I also know they don't last forever. So you just change the way you spend until your up again.

I think it’s smart to not live beyond the means of one of the partners alone for this very situation. It’s tough when one partner makes more than 2X the other but if incomes are relatively close, you shouldn’t live beyond the means of the lowest earner in the household.
