Go to 1:14:44 (the 1 hour 14 minute, 44 second mark) and you'll eventually hear Tariq saying that DJ Kool Herc is the Godfather of Hip Hop the same way that James Brown is the Godfather of Soul as in neither created Hip Hop or Soul, but "took it to another space."
I'm sorry but I think Tariq should've re-worded and fleshed out his thoughts better because James Brown is way, way more influential than DJ Kool Herc bar none without question and I feel like even equating the two sort of waters down the word "Godfather." On top on that we can't give any more inches for those trying to tether onto the foundation of the genre.
I found an interesting video comment (picture attached to post) sums it up perfectly.
Who do you consider the Godfather of Hip Hop?
We already know Foundational Black American Descendants of Enslaved People are the true Mothers and Fathers of Hip Hop.
But who are the Godfathers of Hip Hop?
