I asked the same questions of myself. As I progressed along my spiritual path, it became more and more clear to me that it was a spiritual experience. You know the truth when you encounter it, but our brains are like elastic, keeps us stable. I had been training myself to believe in separation since birth so when I had an experience different from that experience, my brain immediately got to work rationalizing away what I knew was true.

The natural substance that I was on lowered my "defenses". By defenses I mean the habit of seeing myself as a being that is separate from reality. To see ourselves as an autonomous being, "separate" from the world/reality we inhabit is the actual altered state. It is unreality. Contrary to what my brain was trying to convince me of, the weed facilitated a glimpse into actual reality. It did not break my depression (although previous use had helped me realize the insanity of some of my beliefs). Also, though with a far shorter duration, I have experienced the same thing in a different way without a substance.

The best part is, no one has to believe me. This type of experience is well documented, with and without plant medicines, but no one has to believe them either. Oneness is proven through direct experience. Truth is not outside of you so investigate for yourself.
