This one is happening close to me and it makes me so mad. The Tampa police sent notices to landlords when their tenants were arrested or stopped by officers and pushed for their eviction. No shocker that about 90% of those flagged by the police were black and lost their homes even if the charges were dropped.

When asked about the demographics of the people who had been flagged by the program, Mayor Castor said complexes with the highest crime rates were mostly those with a higher percentage of minority tenants. “Criminality is not a protected class,” she said. “If you flip that, on the other side, look at the majority of people you have kept from being victims of crime in these particular complexes.”

This is so evil in so many ways. The Tampa police has always been terrible and this is just another reason why.

Tampa police called for hundreds to be evicted. Entire families lost their homes.

That's just so damn messed up. Why can't things just go right for once? Why can't people live in peace? People are suffering out there, and cops only care about their arrests and meeting those quotas. They don't care if they end up putting people out of their homes.

And why of all people are the cops even asking for hundreds to be evicted? I thought cops didn't care much for landlords issues, but I guess when you say black tenants, they have to go out and push them out of their homes.

I would understand if they happened to be squatters. But, I think the cops heard "black" and just went for it. Because if this was a white dude or family, and they were squatting, they would probably give them some kind of 30 day notice to vacate or something. That's how I see them handling it.

This is so wrong, Policing in the USA is a white supremacist institution so stuff like this is no surprise. What makes it so heartbreaking is how they always try to justify this savagery. The statistics show that 90% of victims are Black and it’s because of some strange coincidence that it’s that way rather than targeting/profiling. They probably want to gentrify the area so they’re using the police to terrorize the Black citizens like they have done in other cities.

Actions like this make Law Enforcement the judiciary because it is stepping into the role of determinant of guilt and sentencer. How is it right to punish the person before they have even had the right to a trial? They are treating an arrest as a conviction which is not only wrong but within the lens of the police being able to arrest or kill Black people with impunity is absolutely appalling. So a suspicion of me doing something that results in my arrest can also lead to housing insecurity? That is abuse of a population.

Agree. They will keep doing it until they are stopped.

Yeah it is wrong, but who will stop them? The people haven't been able to. They will keep doing whatever they want to as long as they keep having power over the Black population. Speaking of savagery, it is interesting how they call us savages, but they are the ones always doing stuff like this.

I wish there was someway we could flip this evil system over. And give them what they deserve.
