Velma Is Officially a Lesbian in New ‘Scooby-Doo’ Film, Years After James Gunn and More Tried to Make Her Explicitly Gay

Velma is officially a lesbian.

Clips from the brand new movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!,” which show the Mystery Inc. member googly-eyed and speechless when encountering costume designer Coco Diablo, have gone viral on Twitter, confirming suspicions held by the “Scooby” fan base for decades.

“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY,” reads one tweet, which has over 100,000 likes.

It’s long been an open secret among fans and “Scooby-Doo” creatives that Velma is gay. Even James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the “Mystery Incorporated” series, have confirmed the character’s sexuality, but they were never able to make it official onscreen.

In 2020, Gunn tweeted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

During the 2020 Pride Month, Cervone wrote on Instagram, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why. There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”

Watch clips from “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!,” out digitally Oct. 4, below.

Honestly, I always kinda got the vibe that she was gay. But they never explicitly state she is. Then again I don't think they really had to, you kinda just assumed she was gay.

I don't think anyone ever expected we'd be getting more in depth with these characters and their personal lives though. Most of the time it's just them in a haunted house trying to catch the bad guy. I mean the fact they even had her dating Shaggy in that new show or whatever is weird to me. I doubt the original creators intended to expand on these characters.

It's just studios pushing an agenda and milking a franchise for all they can.

I don't care if you are any letter of the LGBT... I really don't. You do you.

But I have a problem with taking characters who never swung that way and making them hit home runs out to homofield. Just make new characters. I mean they could have introduced someone new but no...I am just so over it all. I don't care if they intended on her being a lesbian. They never showed her that way. In fact, I remember her liking and crushing on a few dudes in the original show. Who they lying to?

I’ve read once that Velma was originally supposed to be written as a lesbian, but due to the times the writers couldn’t make her be a lesbian. I don’t really recall her liking any other characters until Mystery Inc. came out and she was dating Shaggy right at the beginning of the show, but it didn’t last long.
