I know in music, it was not always the case. There have been plenty of female singers who sung songs about love, softness, femininity, loving their men etc. but it seems like in the '90s everything switched. There was more of a focus on promoting women "not needing no man" and it seems like the majority of female artists be them singers, rappers, or whatever always have songs that preach about women having the money, the control, and the power in the relationship.

When did this become the norm though?

I'd say that the new wave of feminism is being exploited, which is ironic for two reasons: one being that feminism was about equality and that many of these artists preaching this are in relationships (Meg, Cardi who perpetually gets cheated on but refuses to leave, and others I can't think of).

Another theory I got is that dysfunction tends to sell, a two family home ain't gonna hit on Billboard like "I don't need no man".
