Denzel & Viola put on an acting clinic in this scene. They deserved all of the awards for their performances the year Fences was released.
Denzel is one of the best actors in Hollywood. I have said this for YEARS but Viola's performance right there was moving. The chemistry between two solid actors really investing in their roles makes a world of difference. Loved this scene.

Kind of a nice palette cleanser for that shout out she gave to racist ass Sandra Bullock WHY VIOLA, WHY???
OMG that almost had me in tears. Denzel’s character really showed the importance of men being able to nurture. He was 100% “provide” and “protect” with minimal “love” and “understanding” which ruined his relationship with his family. This is why I push hard against the notion that nurturing is a woman’s job, no, it’s both a man and a woman’s job to nurture. A man just has to nurture at different times for different reasons. Mom nurtures you when you wake up, Dad nurtures you when you fail.
Ok I don't remember it taking place quite like this.
