Something I was thinking about today. I feel like two people putting all their money in one account seems like a good, responsible thing to; but that account ends up being the source of many an argument. We have a joint account, but ive never taken any money out. I only put money in. It’s so one sided. The idea of us going all the way with one account is terrifying to me. I don’t think I could handle it.

What do y’all think?

I prefer a joint with two separate accounts. We total all the expenses, determine what percentage we gon contribute of our income, and then we put that in the joint every month. Any left over in the joint goes to vacation fund, savings, and investment. The rest stays in our personal accounts so we have some level of privacy and autonomy.

This really depends on who you marry. I don't mind a joint account. I think if you are in a marriage, regardless of who makes what, that money becomes one income that both people can use. I think it is fair to say you can use the money you make to get what you want within reason but if you need to spend beyond your means, asking is the right thing to do. In some married couples, only one person works and decides to share that income. It is rarer today for sure but those marriages still exist.

This is how I do things kinda. I like having the money split up, because if one account gets compromised, we have the other account as a backup just in case. With one, there's no recourse for something bad happening.

That sounds like a good idea to use the leftover money on other things.

Yes and then you get privacy which is important.

You be giving your whole check to your wife huh? That’s what sparked this thread. It’s all good, she sounds lovely.

Not the whole check. We use our joint account to pay bills out of... mainly the mortgage, HPA fees, and car insurance. I shoot a certain amount out of each check over to cover it. Instead of paying those bills directly, I transfer the money into the joint account. I guess you can say what sparked the thread is that I have no idea what’s going on with that account which leads to a lot of suspicion.

I directly pay the cell phone, cable, internet bills. (I used to work for Verizon and got 50% off) She directly pays the other utility bills like water and gas.

That’s a good system and seems like it allows you to focus on just getting the bag.

That’s a nice setup. I want to get out of having to pay the bills completely.

I remember she used to say slick stuff like she shouldn’t have to worry about any bills and should know that her man has all that under control. I bust out laughing. I told her she gonna have to turn off the tv and hit the treadmill. I was clowning.

my boy split with his wife and she cleaned the joint account. court had no mercy on him either, he lost house, car, and got like22% custody of the kids. #GMB
    I say cot dam!

This is one of the reasons I made this thread… those accounts are an open door to fukkery and shenanigans. The man is in a compromising position, and the woman has this constant temptation to do something underhanded just dangling in front of her.

I'm not married but that's what I would do. I would have to have some sort of privacy or I wouldn't feel right. I don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of independence and privacy in a relationship.

I agree, a relationship shouldn’t be you having to give up your autonomy…thats how you end up with people feeling like they lost years being with you. I want my partner and I to be two separate people with a common goal and commitment...they rest is up to them to define.
