I get why there is archaeology, and why it's important, but I always thought it was weird how they would also take graves and artifacts out of the grave/tomb whatever it may be. I'm sure our ancestors have been given the same treatment when it comes to archaeology.

The main reason I bring this up, is why is it acceptable to then put these caskets/coffins up in a museum for all to see? Imagine if in the future, people tore apart our graves and tombs with the sole purpose of learning about us. Just seems like desecration of a grave to me. And then not to consider their religious beliefs on top of it.

What do you think about it? I know our ancestors have received the same treatment, where our people/culture are put into museums for everyone to see.

I started off studying Archaeology but I switched to the Linguistics side. I switched because I thought it was wrong to literally desecrate what is supposed to be someone's final resting place.

They didn't teach us that it was wrong. They taught us that it was important to learn EVERYTHING about past cultures/societies. One thing you have to know about academic people is that they are not religious at all. Even if they have some religious tendencies they will place it aside for the sake of knowledge and discovery. I had a professor who used to joke about what future archaeologists would think when they look in our graves and examine the things we are doing now.

Your post reminds me of a famous Egyptologist mentioning the children from a discovered tomb coming to him in a dream.

It's all about knowledge acquisition for those that are into the studying Archaeology. In a way, digging up graves that are centuries ago doesn't seem like anything wrong in my opinion because I believe that the new generation needs to know about their history. As for thinking about having our own graves digged up when we are dead, if it's centuries in the future after I'm dead, I don't think I would be worried too much about it.

Well, the thirst for knowledge is insatiable which has led to several new discoveries everyday and the need to discover more ,it's not a bad idea to wanting to know about what the cultures and lifestyle of ancient people was like and I think archeology has helped us experience what the world was like long before we were existence and long after we are gone people would still want to know more about what we are doing now and thanks to the internet I think some of that is already on display so no need to worry about someone digging up your grave when they can comfortably check your profile on the web.

They will always tell you that knowledge is power and you can't argue it because that's 100% true. The only thing that you're going to put up for argument at what expense is the knowledge being acquired?
