I always wondered this and never had an answer. We need some old head to give us the game.
San Francisco, CA has had a Low Rider event every Sunday up & down Mission St, ever since I was little. My Dad & I love classic vehicles & I still do!

Thanks sis! Glad to see you and dad have wonderful memories past and future! I have no idea how lowrider culture started its been debated if foundational black Americans invented it and we let Latinos participate then others say Latinos made it. We need someone to set the record straight can you ask your father about lowrider culture?

My Dad has been deceased since 1992, but I know what it is. We started that trend, long before I was born.
Check the movies, Hoodlum, The Temptations, The Five Stairsteps, etc. Our people have ALWAYS set the standard for everything. We built & worked on vehicles long before chop shops were ever invented. Guess who learned from us? EVERYONE!
Unfortunately, we NEVER keep it going. Then, some people like Cheech & Chong step in & copy, making it a Latino thing, but they're NOT the originators, WE ARE!

Rest in power to pops! Yeah I saw someone post on Twitter about foundational black American car culture and I didn't even know we had a car culture as we have a bad habit of giving our stuff away. Heck I recently learned that south Korean chicken was created by foundational black Americans after the war! Hoodlum and the FiveStairsteps great do yoy have anymore recommendations?

Harlem Nights is a great movie also. Racism in the early 1900's, but BLACK EXCELLENCE prevailed. Businesses, style, skill, entertainment, etc

My father and his side of my family are from L.A. he was born in the 30s and was into lowriders and street racing. Back in his teen years, he said they used to race for pink slips (ownership of the car) you would lose your car if you lost. He also told me about the lowrider culture, and never mentioned: "Latinos/Mexicans/Hispanics" being part of or influencing their decision to "pancake" their chevy. Same with the Zoot suit, they copied our fashion too, but like everything we do, some groups always try to take credit for something we've been doing...
