I also started learning how to play during the pandemic. Its true what they say in Hidden Colors about chess. It does wirk both sides of the brain. Feel like I think clearer after I play. I also agree with you that the biggest hurdle is learning all the movements and limits of each piece. Once you have that I would say cultivating a good defensive strategy is extremely important. I got my skills up by downloading the chess app on my phone playing against the computer. Definitely a lifelong game you can always work on or come back to with a new mindset.

Same here. There is an increased focus and a certain "stillness" of the mind that I get after playing.

I used to know how to play chess, checkers, Chinese checkers, all sorts of card games.... Then in my teens I stopped doing all that and forgot most of it LOL I wonder if I would remember if I had a chess board in front of me.
