Why don't we see more black characters leading games?

Don't get me wrong, we've had a few games where the main character was black. Games like GTA San Andreas, True Crime: Streets of New York, 50 Cent's: Blood on the Sand, Watch Dogs 2 (one of my personal faves), Prototype 2, The Suffering (oldy, but good), and The Walking Dead's telltale game are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

That's not too many. I would love to see us more represented in video games. Give us an Uncharted style game with a black character in the lead role. Or hell, give us something fresh and unique with a black voice even.

Oh, Deathloop I believe has a black main character, so we're getting somewhere. What other games did I forget that also have a black main character? I feel like I'm forgetting a few.

Because games are bankrolled by white people that’s why.

Yeah I've thought this before. I hate when some games try to hide behind "historical accuracy" too. If you can respawn immediately and jump off buildings without damage, you can put a black person in a game blackwomancoffee
spliffstarlaughGot a game in their medieval time with dragons but then juelz their way out of including Black people.

    No disrespect to the OP

Wrapping your head around 3D systems isn't too terribly hard. There are hundreds of engines to pick and your product is only limited by your own imagination.

Catgl looks nice but also it's better than sitting and complaining when the tools to get it done are readily available.

I've messed around in 3D max ,Maya, Z Brush, Cinema 4D ect. and most of the software cost's thousands of dollars, being efficient with them takes a long time and learning them takes even longer.
I was self taught with the help of beginner tutorials ,it's takes years to know one of these programs well, and if you don't spend thousands on schooling you'll be limited.
I've made quake maps for quake 3 before on dedicated servers ,it's not easy.
here's a few models I did in 3D max man years ago, trying to rig these for animation is a nightmare.
If I can find my Quake 3 maps I'll post them. Models: ones a Dreadnought the other an APU from the 3rd matrix I think.

Redeem your minds and recognize the power of open source. I have Blender with ray tracing on my system and it didn't cost me a dime.

Blender has been out for a while, I messed with it for a little bit. Once you get used to a certain program/workflow it's hard to jump to another program and be proficient with it...it still takes time and some schooling to be able to pull off animations, modeling, rigging ect.

I think as more black men and women get into the gaming scene, things will change. Like mentioned, the people making most games are white dudes and they want to relate to their characters. It makes sense. I would rather them do that than virtue signal and give us a half-assed black character for the sake of diversity. It is like a pitty thing and I take that as a slap to the face.

Yes, but with opensource you can expect the codebase to be similar on function unless it's a new feature. Blender went from Cycles to EEVEE without missing a beat.

    Open source is the future

I don't doubt that, but messing with 3D max for years then trying to switch to blender was really hard fort me. Same thing with Photoshop tried coral draw and didn't like it at all. But I might give blender another shot... 3Dmax is too expensive for me.

I cannot view computing without an open source lens. I do, of course, believe that people have a right to choose.

If I am going to participate in a project and people start talking about Windows, that's like trying to put chains on me after I've escaped.

Anyhow, use whatever tool you are successful with.

It's Black people leading that will change it, not just Black people working in the field.

I'd love to see more black voices represented in games, but by actual black people and not a group of white people in a boardroom.

We need to create our own works of art. Because it's clear, when a white creator makes things for us, it doesn't live up to what we always want.

Honestly, if I had the skills to make my own games, I would. But I have no patience for that process. But, that's okay. We have many black voices out there who can one day find their way into making video games, movie, tv shows and more.

You guys are right in saying that we need to create the games we want to play. It's actually kinda surprising to me that there aren't more studios run by black creators. I hope in the next 10-20 years we'll see a lot more showing interest in the gaming industry.
