Most of my life, my hair has been natural meaning no perms. But I have received perms in my hair years ago. I returned natural in my early teens. Now being in my mid 20’s, I may get my hair loc’d. I have 4c hair, high porosity, and it’s very dry. I need to spay it with water and moisturize it tonight. I need the back of my hair pressed for stretching and twisted. My next hair appointment is not until next month. Maybe in February I’ll be getting my hair loc’d. My main hair goal is length. I had good length as a child before the perms. I had the best length in my early 20’s thanks to my former hairstylist. I’ll continue to think about it, but every time I see pictures of Black women with locs it makes me more interested.

I had locs in my teens and enjoyed it. It was a lot easier to manage but man did it damage my scalp. Took me a few years to correct it so be careful with that. I just go natural these days. I am mixed so I have thick hair but it is soft and fluffy enough to just wear loose.
Wow okay. Thank you for the warning. I have a professional hairstylist so I don’t think I have to worry about that. If this woman doesn’t do locs, I’ll hang it up. But from what I learned through the years, they can be started either with loc method or twists. I’m always getting two-stranded twists so I was going to start from there. My focus is to get my hair out the way as well. I deal with dryness and shrinkage. My hair tends to tangle as well.
On a typical day I will have my hair loose, but it be in a single Afro or Afro puffs. If I get my hair done professionally, I wear it in braids/twists. Have you ever had the steam treatment? I learned they are great for strengthening hair and scalp.

Locs will work really well for you, you should go for it. Probably be much easier to maintain too.

I used to have a perm once upon a time and funny thing is 6 months after "chopping out" I started my locs and I've have them for 7 years now...which is crazy when I think about how long I have been growing my hair. I've always had long hair and would rock braids but locs just felt right. Honestly, I had my doubts on whether or not I would look good with locs but I'm glad I made the change. I started when my hair was long enough to twist so I went through the "ugly phase" but it was well worth it.

So you were like Malcom X with the perms? I am glad I returned natural because those perms were annoying and I can see the difference of how my hair is versus over a decade ago. Back when I was younger, I could remember running to the sink for my mother to rinse the creamy crack out (just for me, dark and lovely). I don’t miss those days at all. The only problem I have with my natural hair is maintenance and dryness. My hair has really been great in 2019, and it was the longest. I was amazed to see how my hair is capable of growing. Proper maintenance will do that. I want locs to grow my hair longer and help with maintenance. Plus I think they would look good on me. Most times I want my hair up where I don’t have to comb, pluck, or brush. Only mist with water and use hair butter for moisturizing. Protective styling is my best friend, but I need professionals to do it. I also like to be versatile with my hair. Do you keep up with the length of your locs? I wonder how the hair grows the wai it does because I learned you not only need a healthy and clean scalp but trimmed ends. The hair cannot grow if the ends aren’t trimmed. I received my first trim in like 2 years last month. I am due to receive another in March (I believe).

Lol, no I wasn't trying to look like Malcolm but I was into the history and trying to go for a certain look. As far as my locs they go down my back and doing it yourself after they have loc'd is pretty easy...until it gets long. Eventually I had to learn how to do it because sometimes I either couldn't pay or the women I went to have it done weren't available and I'm picky about who does my hair. I try and keep the same person so they know which direction to twist them in but when that doesn't work out it's good to know a few easy styles just in case you want to look presentable. Styling locs is WAYYY easier than braiding or cornrowing because I couldn't do that.

Definitely clip the ends but more important is knowing how to wash your locs. After they loc you should wash them at least every two weeks. I've seen people who have had locs longer than I have but mine is longer than theirs. One sista in particular had locs to her shoulders when I had a perm and now my locs are longer than hers. I also put raw shea butter, coconut oil and argon oil in mine.

I understand about being picky about who does your hair. I want the stylist to be good at their craft and love what they do. I now have a stylist who I trust to care for my hair and she’s professional. It took me over a year to find the right stylist. Another thing is the stylist I go to has to be gentle. I have 4c hair and although I love my naps they are annoying. I grew up tender headed also. My new stylist doesn’t hurt. She had twisted my hair very nice last month. Now months ago in the summer I went to a lady and she braided my hair. It looked nice, but my head started to hurt. I didn’t return.

I like the styles of locs. It’s so versatile. The only thing is I like different hairstyles. Braids and twists are my favorite. Afro puffs with braids was my usual. My hair grows faster when I don’t have to manipulate it. I never learned how to braid hair, nor am I an expert in twisting. I will get my ends clipped in another two months. Also, I have seen locs being washed. It looks so relaxing. I saw a person receiving a detox. Seems like you are doing well in caring for your hair. I use shea butter sometimes but mainly use mango butter and cream based product. I use to use oil in my scalp, but was instructed not to do that anymore.

Try faux locs for a minute see if you like it before you get real ones, if you’re not sure

I never had a steam treatment but I had one of those detox washes a few times in recent years. They aren't cheap but man does it feel nice. Your scalp feels like it can breathe again. I do one wash a week and have maintained a healthy scalp for a while now. I would like to get it down to 2 washes a month, at least in the winter months when my scalp is more dry. When I had locs, I was doing once a month and it was nice but I didn't prep for it which is likely why my scalp was hit hard from it.

That must’ve felt heavenly. I bet it get all the impurities out. I haven’t had a detox yet. I don’t think I need one of those. I have a hair appointment in exactly three weeks and I can’t wait. Last time I had my hair washed it felt good and the products smelt heavenly. The steam treatments are done on clean hair and then rinsed out afterwards. Here’s a photo of the benefits. I’ve been getting them since 2019/20 and will start back next month or February. Suppose to get one my next appointment but forgot to add it. I usually get my hair washed twice a month. Some years ago I was getting my hair done every other week.

Definitely. Ive been like that about my hair since I was a kid when a barber messed up my fade lol. But locs allow you to get creative. I’m not a hair expert by any means, because I have no idea what “4c” is 😂 but I try and learn what I can.

Thank you for the information lol. I usually know what I want the end result to be but not the terminology. Last time I had my hair done I told her I want the “Marshawn Lynch’s”. I learned how to do my own hair because I remembered how people used to do mine.
