..................But aside from their game of choice, athletes lack conviction in spades.

OHHHHHHHH my my my.
I thought Nike was a corporate pillar of morality and ethics?
I mean cancelling contracts on folks because you wanted to "take a stand against anti-semitism"

Tweeting links to movies is a step too far, but company blow-jobs is well within the levels of acceptability?

Interesting how this wasn't news during the witch hunt of K.I.

We need to pull our money out of this society as much as possible. I bet you when that hits a critical point they will break off that check.

Divestors are such small-minded and backwards-thinking thinkers. They advocate for divesting from the Black community for every single thing, but notice how they never advocate for divesting from the white supremacist system and from this corrupt society as much as possible? They have such a defeatist "if you can't beat em, join em" mentality and claim that they are "being realistic."

I wish all these athletes banded together and pulled their contracts on Nike, but it will never happen. That money talks and the majority of those on contract won't back out.

But damn would it be big if players did actually come out in full force and backed out of their contracts one by one. Nike wouldn't see it coming.

You need an alternative. It's a HUGE ask to give up millions of dollars. Great sentiment and I'm not fan of Nike BUT you need an alternative.

So they pull out of Nike and got to Adidas?

I've said this before in Another thread. The NBA black players (as well as other black athletes) would actually make way more money if they created their own shoe. They, us, DEFINE what is in. We ARE the culture. Nike is Nike because Blacks made Nike relevant. Those are facts. White kids buy what Black people like and buy. End of story.

If even just a handful of the more famous current and retired Blacks created their own shoe. After it sells out, a year or so, after, sell shares of the company on Nasdaq or the NYSE. It would be worth tens if not hundreds of billions the first day of trading. Keep 75, 80 percent of the stock for ourselves. In this way retain control and can give athletes stock with a sponsorship deal. You can also issue non voting shares of stock in a Class B version. Very common. You can raise billions and billions of money and the buyers of the stock won't be able to vote on who is CEO or the Board or anything.

This new shoe would take off. So many ways this would be crazy profitable. Merchandising, shirts, bags, etc. Tennis, soccer, NFL, track and field, the same thing Nike and Adidas do, it can do.

We would cut Nike's profits in half without trying and....wait for it...eventually buy THEM OUT!

I’m always wondering why the Black athletes don’t use their capacity to do something for their people more. Too comfortable. Perhaps we can find a way to disrupt it..?
I think it's because they don't want to risk their careers or lose potential profits from the deals they have. If they cared, they would back out of most deals they do with Nike and move on from them completely, but most sports stars want that money. Most sports stars would fight for a cause if they feel it'll benefit them. If it doesn't benefit them, then they probably won't make the attempt.

And the sad truth about all of this, is that eventually people will forget and Nike will go on doing their thing.

I think what would help, is if one of the bigger stars to step out against Nike, and ask for others to join in. I think we would need someone with the star power of LeBron for example to come out and say they're against Nike, because otherwise, nothing is going to get done.

You're probably right about the clauses...But there's always loopholes in these situations for the prospect of a breach of contract. There are different ways to finesse a breach of contract even IF the parties are performing their duties as agreed. Either way, I like the idea of them wearing a different brand. It would most likely FORCE a breach of contract(because I would presume the athletes have to wear Nike's shoes) and then the athlete is free to sign elsewhere. Or better yet, design their own shoe.
