California fast food workers to get $20 minimum wage under new deal between labor and the industry

Most fast food workers in California would get a $20 minimum wage next year — a nearly $5 per hour raise — under a deal announced Monday between labor unions and the industry that will avoid a costly referendum on the November 2024 ballot.

I'm all in favor of a bare minimum hourly wage. But it should be a livable wage. However, I don't think you can apply the same wage all over.
By that I mean, a national $20 or $25 an hour wage. My view is that it should depend on the state or county.

$20 an hour works in LA maybe, but in small town Mississippi it would kill the local economy because the cost of living for both are vastly different.

It is why I think a national minimum wage won't help. I think there should be some sort of formula for each county based in part for the cost of a 1 bedroom apartment for a family of 3 or 4 maybe. Or whatever metric. It could be $14 an hour in a town of 2000 people in Mississippi or $20 an hour in Orlando but that may not be enough for very high standard of living cities like San Francisco or NYC and so it could be $30 an hour there.

I was making $ 20.00 well 18.75 an hour working UPS Xmus rush plus overtime in 1986 $850 after tax every Thursday I was always broke then they took a 5-dollar cut and went from 100% major Medical and dental to a 60-40 insurance plan. Reggonomics is one of the main reasons with the NAFTA mess is why your not making top dollar today you see they play the people every 30 years bringing in the new school graduates plus immigrants that will work for lower pay.

You are absolutely right. $20 an hour minimum wage would mean that jobs here in Mississippi that already pay that much would have to raise their wages as well.

That clause is there to protect the small mom & pop restaurants that cant afford to pay what the bigger chains should be able to afford.
On the flip side, if every potential employee is chasing $20/hr at McDonald's or Wendy's, then the neighborhood burger spot might have a hard time finding workers.

I like how they went from $15 to $20 instead of going to $17.50.
