So I started growing a few different things. First time ever, so I am just winging it.

I am having issues with my tomatoes. They came out and the plants are about 4 feet tall but the tomatoes they are throwing just aren't growing! It has been a while since many came up and the biggest one I got is a bit bigger than a golf ball. I have 4 plants in one container (a large 18 gal one) but maybe that was not enough room. I used soil with food in it and pre-composted in place on the bottom.

Does anyone know what I did wrong?

I was hoping to stockpile some and freeze them for sauces and stuff.

Could be a number of things: lack of water, too hot, poor pollination, or too much shade. It helps to check what kind of tomatoes you have as well. Some varieties only grow to a certain size.

You have 4 tomato plants in an 18 gallon container? They may be competing with each other for nutrients and/or water. Tomatoes like moist, but not soggy soil. I would limit it to no more than 2 tomato plants per 18 gallon container and add some other companion plants in there like basil, borage, nasturtium, or marigolds.

Yeah I removed another one so now there are only 3 and it seems to already be doing better. I am guessing it was overcrowded or something. I am going to top it up with some fresh soil later today that has plant food in it as well.

It is quite possible you did nothing wrong. There are many different varieties that encompass a wide spectrum of sizes & colors.

As a Novice to mid range gardener I prefer to deal exclusively with elements of landscape design, installations and obviously floral & shrubbery management & installation.
