No.
... only do that after you’ve changed your fate.
When we as Black Americans are at a point where we have an economic footing and can punish those who abuse us I think it would be a good time to focus on the superficial. I want Black Americans and Black people globally to stop thinking like victims, equating Blackness with poverty and squalor, and when we see ourselves for what we deserve we will naturally start fighting to right the wrongs.whats a good example of this?

I’m not saying what anyone should or should not do. If someone wants to change their name that’s fine, Malcolm X made a huge statement by doing so. But I feel like it’s window dressing…what good is a shiny coat of paint on a raggedy house? So on an individual basis its not appropriate until everyone is ready?
Yes I have but have been asked to wait until my grandmother passes on. I have been wanting to rid myself of this pinkerton slave masters name.

Oh I am defiantly going to take my time choosing and I have the paperwork from the county in hand. But my granny asked me to wait until she passes on, I can't disregard her wishes...she is 94.same here.
the only reason why i havent done so yet is because its a big deal to me.
also learning who foundational black americans truly are, its caused me to approach this change with full consideration.
I agree with that but Black people have been way too gun shy and so I can’t get behind any symbolism. You either ready to get buck or you not.i see.
believe me. i know full well how black people rely too much on symbolism instead of substance.
but consider that sometimes changing your name and/or how you view yourself can be the beginning of changing on the inside as well. Throughout the bible, God changed names before that person had done anything noteworthy. they had to shake off the old name and everything that came with it and what better way to do that than with a new name.
so it depends on the person i think.
"Pharaoh Said That" got me to thinking about changing itI agree with that but Black people have been way too gun shy and so I can’t get behind any symbolism. You either ready to get buck or you not.
It's funny because I was just thinking about how some names are common like Johnson Jones Davis Williams and i don't think about the origin until i hear a negro with the name like Fitzgerald or McSomething. I know a girl who's surname is Shropshire and that just screams slave name to me.
I say all that to say if my name sounded outwardly plantation-ish like that, I might consider changing it but no otherwise for reasons @Jay gave
I think about it all the time... I'd go the Malcolm route.. Just give me an X
Yeah I like X cuz theres no permanence to it. The X is a to be continued like saying “I banish my slave name for now with an X and I’ll get back to figuring out a new name once my foots out yo ass”now this...
This. I have seriously considered.
Not only does it rid us of the slave name.
Not only does it give us a new name.
But its a constant reminder to us lest we forget.
and its a constant reminder to the descendants of slave owners, of their crimes and a debt owed.
i actually also thought about changing my last to master just to hear yt ppl call me Mr. master.
but, would never.
lol im dyingYeah I like X cuz theres no permanence to it. The X is a to be continued like saying “I banish my slave name for now with an X and I’ll get back to figuring out a new name once my foots out yo ass”
I’m all about action, if I do this right ima be a marked man believe that.lol im dying
my dude is about that action. said fuk the name shyt,

i know who to call when its go time.

I’ve thought about it but wouldn’t know where to start. I may do it after doing a dna test to see who my ancestors were.
I may go that same route.I think about it all the time... I'd go the Malcolm route.. Just give me an X
I would and have family that has legally changed theirs but kept their slave last name as their middle name for continuity.
When I do it I’m doing a complete break Sovereign Mutumbo.
For some reason we’re always at our best in the 4th qtr down by 2 points and need to make that last minute 3.same here. complete break.
if we gotta start from zero. cool weve done it before.
you remind me of monk from gangs of new york.
we all like were here today to fight for our honor and
the memory of our ancestors. blah blah blah
and youre like....
negro, WHO IS WE KILLING AND HOW MUCH PER NOTCH.
(watch till the end)
also, if you havent seen this, get on that.
Man that was so interesting...that little clip had me hooked and yes I'm definitely a monk personality type. But I'm a Monk type at the Lieutenant Colonel level, I'll assemble 1000 Monks and then send them at you.
My father changed his name in his 20's when he joined the Nation and so I inherited that name. So the problem was solved a generation before in my lineage.
Nope, never have. I don't watch many movies.OMG have you not seen "gangs of new york"?
