When we as Black Americans are at a point where we have an economic footing and can punish those who abuse us I think it would be a good time to focus on the superficial. I want Black Americans and Black people globally to stop thinking like victims, equating Blackness with poverty and squalor, and when we see ourselves for what we deserve we will naturally start fighting to right the wrongs.
I’m not saying what anyone should or should not do. If someone wants to change their name that’s fine, Malcolm X made a huge statement by doing so. But I feel like it’s window dressing…what good is a shiny coat of paint on a raggedy house?
Yes I have but have been asked to wait until my grandmother passes on. I have been wanting to rid myself of this pinkerton slave masters name.

believe me. i know full well how black people rely too much on symbolism instead of substance.
but consider that sometimes changing your name and/or how you view yourself can be the beginning of changing on the inside as well. Throughout the bible, God changed names before that person had done anything noteworthy. they had to shake off the old name and everything that came with it and what better way to do that than with a new name.
so it depends on the person i think.

I agree with that but Black people have been way too gun shy and so I can’t get behind any symbolism. You either ready to get buck or you not.
It's funny because I was just thinking about how some names are common like Johnson Jones Davis Williams and i don't think about the origin until i hear a nigga with the name like Fitzgerald or McSomething. I know a girl who's surname is Shropshire and that just screams slave name to me.

This. I have seriously considered.
Not only does it rid us of the slave name.
Not only does it give us a new name.
But its a constant reminder to us lest we forget.
and its a constant reminder to the descendants of slave owners, of their crimes and a debt owed.
i actually also thought about changing my last to master just to hear yt ppl call me Mr. master.

I would and have family that has legally changed theirs but kept their slave last name as their middle name for continuity.

For some reason we’re always at our best in the 4th qtr down by 2 points and need to make that last minute 3.
My father changed his name in his 20's when he joined the Nation and so I inherited that name. So the problem was solved a generation before in my lineage.
Man that was so interesting...that little clip had me hooked and yes I'm definitely a monk personality type. But I'm a Monk type at the Lieutenant Colonel level, I'll assemble 1000 Monks and then send them at you.
