Many disaster survivors can't work right now. A lot of them just got their lights back on earlier this week. Many are still without power. Insurance payouts take time. Complicate this with no electricity, no internet, no cell phone service and no roads in many places.
There are many stories of extremely flawed FEMA responses from past disasters... Hawaii, Key West, Puerto Rico... I'm sure there are more.
The U.S. also just marked $157 million for Lebanon yesterday. So, add that to the recent $8 billion for Ukraine, $8.7 billion in weapons to Israel and $567 million in defense aid to Taiwan. At the end of the day, the optics are not good and people will remember being left in the mud and dirt to fend for themselves
