This tweet made me ask this question. I have to rack my brain to figure out if there's any artist that even has the potential to be that guy, let alone actually is. In the 80s it was undeniable, we had LL, Run DMC, NWA. In the 90s we had Tupac, Big, Nas, Jay Z, DMX. In the 2000s we had Wayne, Eminem (I know, I know) Nelly, Ludacris and Kanye. And of course this past decade there was Kendrick, J. Cole, Drake, and Nicki Minaj (again, I know).

Looking at this new era we have seen minimal artists that had the it factor to lead an era for the next decade and we're two years into it already. The artists that I've seen mentioned so far are Uzi, Carti, Lil Baby, Gunna, and those of the like. Commercially they do well but they don't necessarily stand out, or there's nothing special about them. They may seem interesting but not enough to convince me that they can lead hip hop through an entire decade. The important part about this is they aren't undeniable, even if you don't like them. Many are critical of the likes of Nelly, Eminem, or Nicki, for example, but they're undeniable impact wise.

This is the first decade that we have experienced the beginning of where streaming took a large portion of music consumption, and as the Is Old Music Killing New Music article stated (Is Old Music Killing New Music?) record labels haven't figured out a way to produce talent. They have yet to catch up to the technology, which struggles to get the spark that you would get watching a music video on MTV in 2003.

To produce a new superstar, the industry is going to have to have more room for organic growth instead of trying to force certain artists on our playlists and algorithms. The Blog Era was the last time we saw that, but I'm seeing plenty of dope artists on Hip Hop Twitter which could cause a shift if given a chance.

I'm lost on this question, I don't listen to any of this new stuff by these new artists. About the only one I'll even give a listen to is DAX.
The rest I can't stomach.

Dax is interesting because he's skilled yet gets pigeonholed as corny for some reason...these kids love their generic guys tho

    I think so and it's because I feel like the talent is on the back burner. It's about catch, quick singles, that chart and go away. The last night superstar I believe we had was 50 Cent. He was an icon, some people will say Drake but I don't really see Drake in the same light. He is a success but 50 Cent had a presence and an image that I haven't seen topped.

    Around 2014, there was a lot of promise for the up and coming artists. I had big hopes for guys like Danny Brown, Joey Bada$$, A$ap Rocky, Earl Sweatshirt and Earthgang. Personally I think guys like Kendrick and J. Cole are so overrated because their peers are for the most part so meh. A lot of superstars from back in the day were master emcees instead of industry plants and astroturf superstars...to which I'll counter with, when you have so many mediocre white rappers hanging around, how can the industry not be negatively affected? I would like to see more rap groups come out as well. If anything it will have to come from the underground cuz thats where hip hop started. but for now, " a tall Israeli is running this rap shit.     For the new(er) generations, do the likes of Cardi B, Megan the Stallion, Da Baby, NBA Youngboy, Travis Scott, Roddy Rich, Kodak Black, XXXtentacleporn (I know he died a few years back, but still), and Doja Cat count as the most recent superstars? Or no? I know they don't compare to the previous generations as far as impact, influence and talent. It seems the newest female rap superstars may have more staying power than their current male peers of their generation in the long-term.

    That's something I wanted to address, many are saying that women are taking over and it's looking like the truth. They're getting more of a push it seems, at least from what I can see.
    I guess TPTB feel that they already helped destroy and conquer enough Black males with a lot of the toxicity, idiocy and self-hate they've been promoting for quite awhile now. Time to get the Black females next. It's literally by design that they'll overflood the zone with dumb toxic content and terrible toxic rappers, and yet only dangle around the few Kendrick Lamars and J Coles they have on their rosters so they can shut us up with, "See, today's music is not so bad and we promote good artists too."

    While it is good that more female rap artists are getting more shine and that there isn't only just Nicki Minaj anymore, I am a bit concerned that they are using them all as tools to promote and reaffirm more harmful stereotypes about Black women, and to promote self-destructive forms of Feminism disguised as "Female Empowerment." Damn near all of them look and sound the same to me and keep singing and rapping about the same tired shit (e.i. sex and being a bad bish) much like most male rappers (e.i. sex, crime, drugs, money) in the mainstream / forefront do.

    Like first of all, how is the song "WAP" considered Female Empowerment when the line "there's some hoes in this house" repeats throughout the song and all the women in the video look like Proud Prostitutes inside a Whorphanage? Like let the song just be about WAP and nothing else, no need to make it more than what is already is: A Thot Anthem.

    There are no more Lauryn Hills and Missy Elliotts being put in the forefont to balance this shit out anymore. All these damn twerkers, Dolls, Lils, Youngs, Babys. The rap / hip hop game is quite stagnant and regressing now due to the continued over-promotion of arrested development (and I'm not talking about the rap group by the same name either). That's how I know something is up and that we need a new genre that nobody can invade and buy out.

    I also don't like how the industry is having Lizzo out here looking like a damn fool while she is also proudly allowing it. She has enough talent to not need to resort to attention seeking antics and looking tacky. She couldn't just be the oversized chick who just happens to know how to make decent music? No... she and those above her wanted her to not only over-promote the whole "Being Fat and Plus Sized is Okay" thing, they also had to have her twerking around half-naked like the rest of her female peers do while doing it. I guess they didn't want 1 Black female rapper / singer to stand out in an actual good way. They all have to twerk their asses off, pop their WAPs, and be tacky while doing it.

Ultimately I believe that is why the superstar is dying, it's because no one has a true passion for the art and it shows.
    Also don't like how they'll mention and/or occasionally dangle around more underground hip hop / R&B / other genre artists like Ari Lennox, Tierra Whack, Chloe and Halle, etc and act like they care about decent / good artists and are willing to put them on and help increase their profile, but they usually just let them have a performance spot on an award show and call it a day.

    For R&B, the only new R&B female artist in the mainstream that I see them really promoting is H.E.R. and S.H.E. can't carry this modern R&B shit by herself!

    It's really time to depart from the mainstream.

    I don't think it's dead we saw how niggas went wild over that mid grade super bowl performance by the AARP West Coast Choir section. The music really is at all time low but if someone really brought the heat they would rise to prominence. I think if anything we getting older so we not really up on the latest trends. The next superstar rapper gonna be a nigga whose career starts off in Fortnite. That nigga gonna be doing concerts there and then gonna come out into reality. He gonna be mult-plat before you even know he exists.

    They're established superstars though...they may be old but they transcend. I can't think of any new artist that'll last that long...mind you they've been around for 25-30+ years

I'm not sure what has happened over the years, but some of these newer artists just don't have the touch that the older artists do. Once again, this is my opinion, but I feel like various others may feel the same exact way. Let me know what you guys think.

    I agree with your sentiment, and as always I always want your opinion. I don't know if I touched on this but the organic elements of it has died... everything is about chasing a hit. If one song does well everyone is gonna mimick that sound.

    This is exactly what I was attempting to say, you stated this extremely well. One artist creates a top-notch song, others are going to try something similar. It's all about the money, and nothing about authenticity. It doesn't take long for a new song to become old, it's unfortunate, but it's very true.
