My circle and I don't use perjoratives slurs for gays or blacks or anyone (Mexicans, Women). I have put written a "n*gga" on here but will try to stop that because frankly, I don't use it regularly.
Anyway, I have never listened much to KL and its not because I don't like him. I just never got around to it strangely enough. I've heard his music on award shows, etc.
I did some research and it said that his wiki page said
"In March 2012,
MTV announced that Lamar had signed a deal with
Interscope Records and
Aftermath Entertainment, marking the end of his career as an independent artist."
So, that may explain the problems Jay and Marcel has with his music. The label dictates what can go on an album at the end of the day. You give up part of your soul for the bag. That's always been the way in music. You can kill as many black men as you want in rap but you can't kill a white man. How many songs out there where a white person is killed? I can't think of more than 3 or 4 tops. Not saying there aren't more but you can't. Someone famous, maybe Jay Z, don't recall, had to remove a line about killing a white label exec for not having his royalty check.
Kool G Rap had a rap about stealing from the Italian mafia and killing them at the end. Anyone else think of any? Eminem can kill white people, but 50 Cent can't.
Anyway, my guess is the rainbow inclusion in Kendrick Lamar is either the label making him do it or you are so far in the industry that you meet so many its normalized. There has always been artists we didn't care what they did in their private lives (Luther Vandross, Little Richard, Prince marketed himself as maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, everyone early on assumed Queen Latifah liked ladies.). It's always been, you make good music and we don't care. All the aforementioned are well liked. My co-favorite 60s civil rights activist is James Baldwin. You are for black folks or true to the community, we let you be you in private.
That said, the imagery on the video is great though. Gotta admit the Nipsey thing is surreal and is an emotional trigger.
