Monie Love stated in this video on Flavor Flav's podcast a fairly popular opinion on female rappers; that she enjoys the sexual freedom but still believes that there should be more balance. More women that can express themselves in more ways creatively and musically, with varying topics. What do you think about her criticisms? I believe that from my experiences with the fans of said artists (Meg, Cardi, and Doja for example) it's all they want, and if you try to suggest an alternative they'll scoff at anything that isn't familiar. Having said that, hip hop media can do a better job of promoting alternatives.

I agree, there's no balance...it's all hoe stripper crap and I'm tired of it. There's no Queen Latifah's no MC Lyte's just a bunch of strippers.

These rappers today use their bodies because it is easy to bank on it. You don't have to have a brain in your head, have any morals, or stand for anything. Just get yourself a big fake booty and some fake tits and show them off in a music video or on a stage. It is pathetic. There are plenty...but the labels and hip hop media refuses to promote them. But I think it's more of a consumer problem than anything; Rapsody, who's the most popular alternative, has 500k followers on IG, where Sukihana who's a D lister has 1.5 M followers.

But that goes back to distribution and promotion. If there was never any ads for 6ZEROS on TBA or Tariq I would have never found it. The more ads and promotion that Jay does, the more people we will see sign up. Sukihana is everywhere. She was even on an Apple Music keynote, is Rapsody in all those same places? If she had a similar push she could blow up. But rappers like her aren’t given the same sustained push.

Yeah I agree. I think the sexual freedom is fine but there has to be a balance there. The ones out there now are way too extreme and I feel like they're trying out do each other. I would love to see some real talent out there instead of them using their bodies to get the fame.

In looking to liberate Black women they end up objectifying them and reinforcing the "women are only good for sex" form of thinking. Black women are classy, gorgeous, majestic, and we do not see that displayed in the mainstream. With that said, it is our job to do so and this board is a step in us creating our own channels to communicate and distribute our message.

Definitely agree with Monie Love. We need a balance. In the 90s we had Queen Latifah and Lil’ Kim, Lauryn Hill and Foxy Brown, etc. We were able to choose who we wanted to listen to. I saw another poster bring up Rhapsody and I was going to mention her as well. She’s dope but unfortunately the labels don’t push her music. People are not requesting her songs on the radio. But we all know it’s about money and sex sells, so that’s why they highlight Meg, Cardi and Nicki. You have to damn near sell your soul to be in the music industry these days.

The problem is, these ladies get such small recognition compared to the Cardi B's of the industry.

This also comes with the switched culture and promoting the bad and not the good. They promote people like Cardi because it keeps black people on the short end of the stick. Think about everything these women represent: Hoe living, lust for money, objectification, acting out, masculinity... What kind of man wants to commit to this? I mean if I was a dude, I would only look at these women for sex and nothing more and that is exactly what they are promoting out there. Use us, abuse us, and find the next hot young thing you can. It is disgusting.

Little girls grow up thinking this is ideal and normal. They hold such low value for themselves, is it any wonder why they end up with dudes who treat them like garbage instead of holding a higher standard?
