Wild almonds (bitter almonds) have a toxin called amygdalin; it basically turns into cyanide. Almonds sold in the stores are considered sweet almonds and have way less amygdalin than their wild versions. Some people have figured out a way to use heat processing to reduce this cyanide, but of course you have to do your own research to be sure.
