I never liked it. maybe I am alone with this one but I feel like it has always been trash TV. I think back to when it started blowing up in the early '00s and how obsessed people were getting with it. I was still a kid then and I thought it was stupid. Maybe I was too young to have seen it otherwise?

Has reality TV ever been good or has it always kind of just been trash TV?

nah it all way been trash TV but just because it trash dont mean you cant find it entertaining like some thing that so bad it good.
I feel that shows like The Real World and Road Rules started off really well and showed the promise of reality tv. But when producers saw that ratings spiked during fights and sex it all went downhill.

I don’t remember a time where it wasn’t bottom of the barrel.

That's when the reality aspect of it died

I think the Jerry Springer show is the most influential thing to the new millennium

Jerry Springer? Are you talking about people grown during Y2K because I can see that but the new kids now probably have no idea who he is.

Remember the season with Tec and Yufi or whatever her name was? That was some good TV.

That is a fair observation. I don't really remember much about these shows but I do remember them starting out under a different narrative and ending on a note of being as trashy as possible. It is sad that people have allowed themselves to become entertained by this. I feel like because of this, some have brought this kind of behavior into their own lives without even realizing it. Especially if you grew up watching it.

    This.
The same thing happened to daytime talk shows. Does anybody else remember when Jerry Springer and Maury Povich did serious shows before they switched to full blown fuckery?

Yup man! Same with Ricky Lake and Jenny Jones…once the filth started getting views it dominated. The one who didn’t sell out was Montel, he kept it serious all the way through.

It really did. I came back for an all stars season and then there was one season where one team lost every challenge. I only tuned in to find out how they would find a way to lose that week.

Right? I f**ked with Gordon Ramsey's show for a minute but that got boring albeit funny it was just the same ole ish after a couple seasons
If you're talking about Kitchen Nightmares then YESS!!!!!!!!

I swear I was the only one that noticed. I think it was after Season 2, they literally edited EVERY SINGLE episode the same. The only thing that changed was the location.

    • Ramsey walks in, talks shit about the place
    • He eats the food, talks shit about it
    • Goes to the kitchen curses at everyone and finds old food in the fridge and shuts the restaurant down
    • They come back in the morning and he shows them some new dishes
    • Owner is a dumb idiot who doesn't get it
    • They call a bunch of actors in to order food that night to overwhelm the kitchen
    • one of the chef messes up over and over again and walks out. Ramsey follows him out and gives him motivational talk ***cue devastating music***
    • Chef comes back an turns into chef boyardee ***Cue happy music****
    • Ramsey has a heart to heart with owner...owner talks about how much debt they owe and cries in the office ***cue sad music***
    • Owner turns it around and gets on the program
    • Ramsey has crew redo restaurant
    • Staff comes in the morning to see the new decor
    • Everyone says "WOW AND OMG" over and over, owner feels renewed
    • They kick off one more dinner service and it goes well
    • Ramsey walks out the restaurant to give a summary and takes off as the camera watches him walk away

As a kid, I enjoyed the shit out of reality tv. I sadly watched too much of the MTV and VH1 reality shows back in the early 2000s. And those shows were often just drama and more drama.

One show I do got some respect for, is that Joe Schmo Show, where they pick one dude and the rest of the contestants are actors. The purpose of the show was to make the main dude, not realize it was a fake reality show. I like when reality tv gets creative like that. But the rest I would honestly leave behind.

You can actually watch the first episode below. It's got the dude from It's always Sunny in Philadelphia as one of the actors in on the joke.
