I got a friend that got a 200k job offer to work in NYC, Manhattan specifically, near Columbia Univ. He and his wife were apartment hunting and ended up renting in north New Jersey. After the taxes, and what he had left, and the rent. He said what he would end up would make it seem he was working for the city and tax people than himself.

I would actually live there if I worked in the city and wasn't planning on being there for 9 months, a year maybe. The commute from NJ, Long Island or West Chester county is long AF and expensive as hell. The commuting costs even mass transit is expensive and time consuming.

New York City has lost its damn mind. It is getting so expensive out there it’s ridiculous. I can’t lie though that looks like a cozy spot if you’re a loaner.
I wouldn’t live like that even if I could, but it’s all about survival at this point. 😩

I would never feel comfortable walking down the hallway to take a shower. I always loved taking the stairs up to a bed though. If I ever get rich I’m going to have a large bedroom and have my bed elevated like that.
Please make sure your ceilings are high!!!

I wish people could make good money working near home. I can’t imagine what your commute is like.

I wouldn't want to live in New York or California for that matter, way too damn expensive. I live in and grew up in the Midwest, and yeah it's boring as hell but at least the cost of living isn't a nightmare. When I was a kid I wanted to move to New York, though to be fair I think it's just because they had a Pokemon Center store and I was jealous. :V

He saw that $200k and signed himself up for an L. I had a similar opportunity but I would have to move to Silicon Valley. When I factored in the Cost of Living increase I would end up with the same amount of discretionary income but with increased responsibility and more traffic. I was like hellll no.

I don't think I could live in such a small apartment. I would feel claustrophobic if anything. Only way I could see it working is if I work close to my apartment and I lived with no one else. But otherwise I can't see myself living in such a small place. Even by myself. I need more space. It's pretty bad in California as well though, the cost of living in these areas is rough.

I'm thinking about moving to a different state that's a lot more affordable than say Cali or New York.

I could live in something like that if I was alone and had no one else around. If anything, I'd rather just live in a van and move around the country instead. At least then I can change the location. Still would be living in a tiny place, but it would at least make more sense to me.

And sharing a bathroom with strangers, no thanks!

That looks like dog abuse to me. No way in hell is it okay to keep an animal trapped in such a tiny space.

People who want to live in NYC at this point who aren't wealthy are nuts. You can get yourself a tiny home and have more room!
That is true. I wouldn’t have a dog in that tiny place. The video I shared of another tiny apartment, the renter has a cat. I wouldn’t do that either, but cats can manage better. It’s not worth paying any of these prices in NYC with the hike in rent prices and the flooding of illegal immigrants. I don’t even want to visit the city. I have family in Mount Vernon and Buffalo. I plan to visit Mount Vernon in the future, but I’ll stay away from the city. I couldn’t deal with the heavy traffic either.

It's definitely dog abuse. No dog deserves to be forced into such tiny space. It's only convicted deadly criminals that should be kept in such space for their crimes.

I wouldn't pay such high amount for such a crap apartment for any reason whatsoever.

I think some people still believe it is some sort of status symbol to say you live in NYC and it really isn't. The city is not what it once was. It stinks, there is crime on every corner, and people that live there are typically rude, loud, and annoying. I have been to the city 4 or 5 times and each time I grew to hate it more.

Of course. And their responses would be something like "This city has everything. I'm staying!"
You can find everything you need these days online. Why live in a city!? Live in a safer, smaller area so you don't have to worry about crime, high taxes, overpaying, high rent, etc., etc.

People are just being stupid and living in denial.

During the pandemic when parts of the country went on lockdown, I saw friends ride out the lockdown in houses, apartments with multiple people. Black people. Maybe it happened, but I didn't hear of anyone going 'postal' and having a lot of interpersonal issues. Everyone knew they had few if none other options and whatever issues you have that may be detrimental to multiple people in one place, you kept it in check.

In the next financial crash, I think we'll see more couples staying together purely for financial reasons and similar, pandemic like arrangements. I also think some men with the bag are gonna have a sorta sista/wife arrangement with 2 or more women. Or a couple guys with such arrangement.

Homelessness will skyrocket and there will be a lot of female side hustles that is basically tricking for money. They'll mentally call it something else to deal with it emotionally but it will be prostitution. Either in cash or barter (food for coochie / no or low rent for coochie, etc)

Many in NY and the Bay area may be headed towards this. At some point, some smart politician will run on a platform of addressing the cost of living and places to live.
