With the purchase of Activision and company by Xbox, it's being said that Phil Spencer will let the COD franchise live on as a multiplatform game. But there are rumors saying that he will only honor the original agreement that Activision had with Sony, which means like 3 more years of COD timed exclusivity, which is just the DLC side of things. But, at the end of those three years, it may result in Xbox getting full on exclusivity of the franchise, which means no PS versions.

But those are just rumors at the moment. If these rumors turn out to be true, would COD die if it's exclusive to the Xbox? It's already a franchise that is losing a lot of its userbase, myself included. So if Microsoft makes it exclusive going forward, I could see it hurting the franchise even more. As well, they're missing out on tons of money if they make it exclusive to the Xbox.

What do you guys think?

it is too big of a franchise to stay platform exclusive Call of duty cost 300 million Just to develop and market Plus Xbox always stated they are become more of a platform agnostic company
Microsoft was only try to keep it on Playstation for 3 years after the pre-existing marketing agreement was up. MS does not want COD on Playstation.

As I reiterated call of duty is an expensive property to produce. Some properties and franchises they can make exclusive like starfield or smaller that they might lose money from distributing on other consoles but Call of Duty is not one of those properties. What they are most likely going to do is to associate call of duty with Xbox by giving it away on Game pass for free there for increasing the value of Game pass. Minecraft has been owned by mircosoft since 2014 and its still multiplatform.

You trust Microsoft? They can easily minimize the dev costs to make it profitable on XBOX. Playstation CEO Jim Ryan even commented on it and said Microsoft is bullshittin

COD wouldn't die but its player base would be cut at the knees. Once revenue from the game starts decrease, Microsoft will start pressuring the developers to make changes to the game that don't make sense. Next thing you know you'll have a new COD releasing with an "open world" and launching without multiplayer, playlists, or load outs. It sounds funny but it happened to Halo, COD ain't safe in Microsoft's hands.

Yeah it's corporate politics 101 Meanwhile sony is doing the same thing with bungie and rumored to do it with square enix. Destiny two is not exclusive to Sony Playstation Because again both companies don't make money from their hardware they make it from their software so selling it to the biggest amount Would be the most profitable PS what company especially a large conglomerate like Activision and Microsoft tell their stockholders "Hey I know we're $1 billion franchise But do you wanna cut that out it only make 340 million instead? "That's why Sony is actually moving away from console exclusives and putting their stuff on PC Because at the end of the day both companies want to become platform Agnostic

They do an analysis of the company they are buying before buying it and tell the board what the revenue will be after acquisition. They’ll say COD player base will fall from X to Y but more consoles sold = more device and services revenue so we will see a lift in total revenue.

Putting their games on PC is not a problem because PC has a loyal fan base who will not buy a console. They would be platform neutral if they was making games on each other’s console but that ain’t what’s happening. They actually trying to keep their games off each other’s platform.

    1. How is Xbox/Microsoft telling their stockholders that they're planning to Push more console When they're goal since 2014 is to become platform agnostic meaning they are investing in CLOUD GAMING so you don't need a console in order to buy their games. because again Microsoft is a software company and they make their money from their software not their hardware they make their most money from their software so where are you get the software they don't care as long as you're buying their software i.e. Minecraft you can get Minecraft on a PlayStation 4 you can get Minecraft on a Nintendo switch so therefore at the end of the day you're still giving microsoft your money because again they have stated multiple times and showed with their investments they are moving away from CONSOLES.

    2. PC gaming is not a monolith not every person that has a PC is loyal to Steam in fact there are other launchers like GOG epic and many others and in fact from data most people that on a PC are on a console also

From the article "The data here is from DFC Intelligence, via PCGamesN, and suggests that the PC-versus-console framing for understanding gaming is outdated. Only 8 percent of gamers identify exclusively as console gamers, meaning most gamers play across multiple devices."

Getting rid of the console may be their long-term idea but it aint what they are doing today. They dropped the Series S and X because they know consoles still have a lot of life left in them and could potentially always be a thing. It's not even written in stone if cloud gaming will ever be a real thing.
because again Microsoft is a software company and they make their money from their software not their hardware they make their most money from their software so where are you get the software they don't care as long as you're buying their software
Microsoft is a software and a hardware company. The XBOX is sold at a loss because they know you aint gon buy it and not get any games. They hit you with the low price in the beginning and then make they money back on the controllers, games, and subscriptions. But without the consoles they have no one to sell controllers, games, and subscriptions too and although they trying to change it it aint they reality today. They need the physical XBOX console because they dont have to compete on it. If they was tryna be PC only then they have to compete with Steam, Epic, and the rest of the internet which aint easy.
i.e. Minecraft you can get Minecraft on a PlayStation 4 you can get Minecraft on a Nintendo switch so therefore at the end of the day you're still giving microsoft your money because again they have stated multiple times and showed with their investments they are moving away from CONSOLES.
Minecraft was on everything before Microsoft bought them.
. PC gaming is not a monolith not every person that has a PC is loyal to Steam in fact there are other launchers like GOG epic and many others and in fact from data most people that on a PC are on a console also
Both of those app stores are on the PC so what's your point. What I'm saying is that releasing GOW on PC is not the same type of threat as it would be releasing it on XBOX. Just because they drop a game on PC doesn't mean they are trying to copy Microsoft's console-less future pipe dream.
From the article "The data here is from DFC Intelligence, via PCGamesN, and suggests that the PC-versus-console framing for understanding gaming is outdated. Only 8 percent of gamers identify exclusively as console gamers, meaning most gamers play across multiple devices."
    It says:

"48% of the people of that 3.1 billion (video game players) are on PC. That’s 1.5 billion if you don’t have a calculator near. Comparatively, only 8% are considered to be primarily console users, but they have the highest spending per player."

As I said, PC is not a threat because there is 33% +/- of that 48% that are not primarily console players. Sony will fight Microsoft to get as much of the 8% as possible and then drop their exclusives a year or two after to come up off the remaining 33%.

It will die because XBOX is gonna die off. If the Series consoles sell less than the One consoles then it will be hard to believe Microsoft will release another console. They may drop one more after but if that continues the downward spiral they will cut their losses on the hardware and push gamepass as their future for gaming.

Great point….the 360 is still their best selling console. If they don’t see some upward trajectory with the Series consoles, the scrutiny is going to be heavy on the Interactive Entertainment division or whatever they call it. You have to think, should I spend $10B on another console generation when we continue to lose market share or should I cut my losses.

    1. it's a big enough investment for them to focus on the console less future Because they see the writing on the wall that consoles are thing of the past. The reason why they investing so much into X cloud and game pass
    2. But that's the whole purpose of them becoming platform agnostic so they don't put your eggs in one basket like Sony where Sony needs to PlayStation Console in order to make a profit Xbox is trying to be a software company and not just make money from their Xbox Consoles alone
    3. You're right Minecraft is on all consoles, but again They were bought in 2014 by microsoft. By Your Logic Minecraft legends which came out in 2018 wouldn't of come out on PlayStation or Nintendo switch Or the upcoming Minecraft legends which is also coming to the playsstation and Nintendo Consoles
    4. God of war is a single player game releasing single player games on PC has no effect because you don't need a large pool to run a single player game whereas call of duty is a multiplayer game which needs large pool of players To justify running game servers for 24 seven
    5. Yes they are they stated that even Jim Ryan stated that they're putting more of their games on the pc To compete

I personally don't like it but, because of this there will be some decisions that will have to be made by players now. Take a stand and don't buy or give in we all know the one most people will do.

Sony execs should be on the phone right now:

The writing IS NOT on the wall for consoles because the biggest barrier is Internet Access. The market may shrink to the point where it cannot support both Microsoft and Sony but console-less gaming is a pipe dream. Games are too large to stream and not everyone has a powerful enough PC to play the latest software. Consoles will go when the internet monopolies go away.
    2. But that's the whole purpose of them becoming platform agnostic so they don't put your eggs in one basket like Sony where Sony needs to PlayStation Console in order to make a profit Xbox is trying to be a software company and not just make money from their Xbox Consoles alone
But that's because they are losing and trying to change the entire landscape instead of competing directly with Sony. They want to be a software company and may end up going that way but it most likely will not be because of the death of the console...it's most likely the death of the XBOX.
If they have the intent to keep COD on Playstation why not sign a 10 year or 20 year contract? They were only offering Sony 3 years. That shows that even Microsoft doesn't even trust that they would want it Multiplatform in the long run.
    4. God of war is a single player game releasing single player games on PC has no effect because you don't need a large pool to run a single player game whereas call of duty is a multiplayer game which needs large pool of players To justify running game servers for 24 seven
That was not my point at all. GOW brings value to playstation because you can only get it on Playstation. If an XBOX user wants to play it, they need to get a PS. OR they can wait a year or two and get it on the PC. But by that time Sony has already made a ROI and got the brand cachet off of the release so they lose little but gain sales.
    5. Yes they are they stated that even Jim Ryan stated that they're putting more of their games on the pc To compete
They are not putting games on PC to compete they are putting old games on PC to make money off the folks who don't have a PS.

"In the last three years, Sony will expect to make $415 million in PC game sales alone...that near half a billion dollar revenue comes from games released on the PS in February 2017 (Horizon Zero Dawn), April 2018 (God of War) and April 2019 (Days Gone)."

"By selling its first-party games on the PC, Sony made a calculated risk that the PC would not cannibalise its console business, but instead add an additional source of revenue. It is a difficult scale to balance."

"By releasing catalogue first-party games on PC, they look to find new and secondary markets without alienating day one buyers who would have bought the game on console and most likely finished the game when the PC release comes out."

Sony is seeing an untapped market and catering to it. If they were trying to compete with Microsoft they would be releasing GOW 2 on PC at launch or shortly after. We have no idea when GOW 2 is going to drop on PC because PC is a secondary market for Sony, their focus is on PS because it's printing money.

I hear Sony is worried about Microsoft's plans with Activision and Bethesda games. I think they would be dumb not to take advantage of the user base that COD has. The last COD didn't sell as good as past iterations, and its user base dropped by quite a bit recently, but they still have huge numbers and if they decided to cut that in half or more, because I think more people play on PlayStation & PC than they do on Xbox. They'd lose a lot of players.

As well, Sony fanboys won't make the switch either, they'd just get the PC version or won't get it at all. It's clear and definite money for them. It doesn't make any sense to make it console exclusive, even after their exclusivity deal is up (COD DLC for PlayStation gets first dibs).

And the same goes for Bethesda and their games. There are probably more people playing on PlayStation anyway. So why not support it and make money off of them?

Nah I don't see COD dying anytime soon, even if it was an Xbox exclusive. I don't even see it being strictly on Xbox consoles, at the very least it might branch out to Game Pass on the PC if it wasn't going to be on multiple platforms.
PC and XBOX would be enough to have a healthy player base.

No, it won't die but it's definitely going to lose millions of active players. Even with the Call of Duty Vanguard being on both PlayStation console, the game lost over 50 million active players with that release. Imagine the numbers that's going to drop when they take out Playstation games from the mix.

I strongly doubt that Microsoft will go ahead with a plan to making COD an exclusive to Xbox simply because most of the stakeholders in the gaming industry will kick against it. I've even read somewhere about the director giving assurances that it won't be an exclusive.
