Would you ever consider micro-farming?

I am not sure if "micro-farming" is the proper term here but what I mean by this is having a smaller scaled farm. Like you have a garden for fruit and veg, some chickens for eggs, maybe a pig or two you raise up for meat, and a horse if that is your thing.

The more prices seem to be getting out of hand with food, I am really considering it down the road. Like I think I can handle a handful of chickens and a small garden. I don't think I would be able to handle pigs, cows, and horses though.

I think your applying the words correctly with the strategy, I've considered micro-farming along with hydroponic or indoor gardening. The only examples I have seen of this were while I was in Kentucky and when I traveled to Haiti, I sounds like a good strategy.

You ever see those setups that use aquariums for indoor farming of herbs and other small veg? I was watching videos on that last year and I couldn't believe something like that could work but it does. The fish provided a balanced and nutrient-rich soil that fed the plants beautifully without the need of any sort of manure.

A tomato plant can take 113 to 156 days to grow from seed to ripe fruit. Germination takes 7 to 10 days under ideal conditions. Seedling growth takes 57 to 60 days until transplant. Flowers usually form within 21 days after transplant. Mature fruit will be ready for harvest 49 to 64 days after the flowers appear.

We all know that tomatoes go bad fairly quickly.
I'm not too knowledgeable about the specifics but other veggies are about the same.
Preserving those crops is another science...

That is a good thing to consider. Crops take a LONG time to produce and they don't last. I think back to Genesis with this how Adam's curse from God dealt with crops and harvest. Food was never meant to be this difficult to come by.

But yeah, learning how to can, fermentate, and freeze your crops is something that needs to be thought about. Especially when it comes to changing seasons and thinking ahead if you need to feed more mouths.

I learned from my grandmothers. Summer's with them was fun & educational. Fruits & vegetables that had a short freshness time, were stored in Mason jars & preserving ingredients were added to ensure a long shelf life. They also sold produce, meats & poultry to the community & taught others how to DIY. They always said, "This is how we're ALL supposed to do it".

I kind of hope to meet a person already doing some indoor farming. Just to pay the person to grow seeds I might buy. I'm studying a trade, which gets time consuming. Either I'm going to be a farmer, or a HVAC tech. If I split my focus and expect an excellent result, I could be disappointed.

    It takes a wholesale retooling of how the average person looks at food. Also a divestment from the instant gratification mind state that is so prevalent in today’s society. Agriculture takes time but the payoff is so sweet. The cucumbers out of my mother’s garden were the best cucumbers I ever had in my whole life.

    Yeah, my grandma had pear and pecan trees on her property. Summer nights in the 80s, we would gorge ourselves in that hot Houston, Texas evening heat. The BBQ would be ready but we were already fed by God...

    Absolutely which is the tough part about farming. A little bitty garden is not going to sustain you in the zombie apocalypse.

    It is hard to manage time for stuff like this so it does help to have a partner who is invested where you aren't so you can have the best of both worlds. It is a shame more younger people aren't getting into agriculture and working with their hands though.

    My brother makes his own sun dried tomatoes and they are so good.
    He went to culinary school though...

    He went to culinary school though...
    I have seen plenty of people who never went to school who know how to do this stuff, I think you have to have the natural talent for it. Who knows, it might run in your family. You should give something like this a try and see if it works out. Can't hurt to take up a hobby that benefits you in more ways than one!

    Omg yall have given me such inspiration. I am vegan. And I desire to go to a mainly raw diet. I love going to black own farmers to get my produce.

    I have the desire to start growing my own fruits and veggies 😌. I have been discouraged and or procrastinating due to my living situation. But I am reinvesting my time to really start ,even if small.

    I would love to own and run a real farm to table restaurant. I envision many meals where customers would go into the garden picking there fresh fruits and veggies. And then it would be prepare for them in front of them( like the hibachi places).

    I have be vegan for about 3 years. It was a gradual transition over the last 9 years. Slowly removing all meat groups. Milk and or dairy was the hardest thing to remove.

    But I will say I am very happy with my decision. I would recommend it 1000 percent lol. It does a few things imo. It helps you understand your body more and how to make your body work at optimal levels. When your body needs magnesium or fiber. You will crave the fruit or vegetables that provide that. I am just so intune with my body....even my menstrual cycle. I can maintain my ideal body weight much easier.

    I also think process food is evil 😈 lol. Like I had to re adjust my tastes buds to really know what fresh fruits and veggies taste like. Cus I was so use to process artificial versions of it.

    But it drastically changed my perception and understanding of how to take care of my body.

    I am currently watching my father slowly pass away. He not on life support lol. But he has high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, kidney complications etc etc. And taking tons of pills. So that is also a driving force for me.

    Lol yeah there is vegan food that taste nasty now. I would say a good way to ease into it. Is go to some Ethiopian restaurants in your area and try their vegan dishes. Ethiopian food was my 1st experience of really good vegan food.

    Even other cultures (Caribbean, Mediterranean African cuisine etc) have really tasty vegan dishes. I had phases where I was eating alot of curry type vegan meals. Then I switched up to Asian dishes( sidenote I was addicted to the veggie "sushi" rolls at whole foods lol). Or at one point I was going and getting this Jamaican cabbage side dish all the time girl!

    Not against this trend of vegan in America...but I do feel it's still heavily processed. But it's a journey so I would make it fun! No pressure just an adventure of mother earth.

    There is so much knowledge and experience with older women when it comes to cooking, gardening, etc. that I think younger people these days don't appreciate. I would have loved to have a close relationship with my grandma and learned this stuff from her. Too little too late for me though.
