I thought I was going to game a bit before starting the day and come to find out I ended up watching a 20 minute anime.

    937B7155-9FF9-4D8F-A32C-0D9B1AEAD436.jpeg

Games like this and Persona I feel like disrespect peoples time. I have an hour to play, let me play!

I still love the game but if I wanted to watch an anime I’d buy one.

    Mini-Review of the Game

UPDATE 4/27/23 - I didn’t even finish the game, it was just a long boring slog that didn’t hold a candle to Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The characters were not as engaging, the enemies not fleshed out or explained, and the story spent too much time focusing on stupid conversations rather than lore building. There were so many cutscenes that could have been used to further the story but instead they were just random inconsequential banter between the lead characters.

It feels like they took a step back with this release unfortunately. I honestly do not remember any of the characters names while I remember Rex, Nia, Pyra, Mythra, etc like it was yesterday. Some people actually like i however because it is akin to a playable anime.

My bro said the same thing. Like I am all for games like this when they tell a story and you have time to play them. Like MGS was an amazing game with long cutscenes but so many newer games almost force you to sit through the nonsense and you just feel like you are wasting time. I work and I have a life outside of playing things so I have to be picky with the games I play. Probably why I play mostly online games vs single-player or story based.

I know the Persona series has some long scenes, etc from watching other people play them. Did you look up XC3 before getting it? Certain things are to be expected with some games.

100%. They have to learn how to tell the story while you’re playing not in nonstop videos.
well i mean All modern games have cut scenes and started in the PS one era with MGS1 now games are a combination of full length movies and repetitive gameplay loop to justify the $60 price

But I never said I had an issue with cutscenes. The problem is TOO MANY cutscenes. I buy games to play not to watch.

I didn’t look up XC3 because I didn’t want any spoilers. But I’m a huge XC fan and XC2 was heavy in cutscenes towards the end. This is bombarding you with them from the onset.

I see... Well, you better pop some popcorn and settle in then. That's crazy.
It’s absurd. I know what they are trying to do too. They want you to see the characters interact and help you become emotionally connected but there’s has to be balance. The video shouldn’t get in the way of me playing. I know anime lovers probably are in heaven with this type of gaming but shot of me playing is second fiddle call it an interactive movie and it a video game.

I think this became a trend of laziness in the gaming dev world. Like we see a lot of AAA titles being released unfinished and loaded with microtransactions. They expect us to pay the price for a completed game without putting in the effort.

Well fortunately that doesn’t apply here with XC3. But yesterday I had a cutscene that was about 30 minutes I believe. It started, I took a shower, got out it was still going, went into the bedroom it was still going. Some of them they could have chopped down a bit.

Maybe you could prioritize your time better and game when you ACTUALLY have time.....but I digress.
I did have time but I had time to play video games not watch an anime. If I have an hour to game and 20 mins of that is watching mindless banter between characters im a going to be annoyed.

Well then maybe you need to know the premise of the game better. If you know there are long cutscenes then obviously 1 hour isn't going to cut it.

Behind The Scenes GIF by BET Awards
Oh I understand the premise of the game but 20 minute cutscenes are ridiculous. Making me start at point a where I watch a 10 minute cutscene to walk 3 minutes point to watch another cutscene is not good gameplay. I like to grind so at least it puts some space inbetween the cutscenes.

Or you could just wait until you have 90mins or more next time to game. 1 hour doesn't cut it anymore unless you want to play pokemon or some shit. And that's for most games anymore.....amateur...

Nah the problem isn’t the time for me, it’s the long cutscenes. They pad them out with too much dialogue. There were times where a cutscene went on an additional 5 minutes after the story bits just so the characters can banter on about food. I get that they want to make it cute and charming but it gets exhausting. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn’t do that and neither did 1. Once again I see what they are doing but it’s overkill.

Xenoblade no. Other JRPGs? Yup. Persona 4 and 5.
Cutscenes are abound, every other thing is a cutscene half the time, but (unlike you) I understand the assignment. So I make sure I have more than enough time available when I do play.
So since you haven’t played it you are unaware of the length and frequency of the cutscenes. Instead of focusing on the length of the cutscenes, you’re focusing on if I understand JRPGS and the time I have to devote to games.

Persona 5 is the absolute worst JRPG to use as an example because that game is damn near an interactive video.

The previous game in this series didn’t even have this many long cutscenes until the very end when it was explaining to you everything you played.

This game is doing it in the very beginning and it’s non stop. You may like it and that’s fine but the game is excessive to me. Too much banter.

FF7R , FFXV, and many other JRPGs do not have this issue.

persona 5 is literally an anime with parts and moments where I can play sometimes. which is the exact issue you're taking issue with but, my point is youve played enough JRPGs to know this is a "feature" of their games at times. furthermore, youve been playing THIS particular game at this juncture, long enough to know an hour is probably NOT going to be enough time to actually do anything. that's all I'm saying. So while you're irritated about there being too many cutscenes, and that may be true because I know how JRPGs get down sometimes, would it have been a problem if you had all the time in the world today? Probably not. So the bottom line from where I'm sitting is you didn't manage your time accordingly with the game. You wanna game, fine game for an hour, but make sure it's the kind of game that fits that bill. that's all I'm saying....

You would have a point if I bought Persona or Metal Gear Solid and had this critique but I didn’t. I’m talking about a franchise I have played for awhile that has its own reputation. You’re telling me I’m not allowed to be frustrated with a bunch of cutscenes in Xenoblade because Persona has a lot…that makes no sense.

But this thread isn’t about me it’s about a game that bombards you with multiple long cutscenes which didn’t happen previously in the series. Talking about me only playing for an hour is irrelevant. Because if I played for two hours the cutscenes would still be there.

Every hour of story shouldn’t consist of 30 minutes of video. At least in this game. If people like that there’s Shin Megami Tensin.

No I'm saying you CAN be frustrated with a lot of cutscenes in a game. But YOU own a JRPG and anyone who plays JRPGs knows there's probably going to be a hefty amount of anime with areas for the player to game as opposed to the other way around. IN GENERAL this is a trait of JRPGs. So you being frustrated about a known trait of JRPGs, generally speaking, sounds whiny at best and misplaced at the least. That's what I'm saying.

I agree with you but, nevertheless, it's what you sign up for when you play JRPGs. That's my point. Xenoblade isn't doing anything that is unprecedented in JRPGs and yet you're up here acting like, "OMG there's so many cutscenes"

And now there's Xenoblade Chronicles 3 as well, it would seem.

I’m on Chapter 5 right now and as a Persona 5 fan I even have to admit that there are a lot of cutscenes. The first 3 chapters I pushed through the main story and I feel as if I watched more of the game than I played. Jay has a valid point even if you think it’s part and parcel. I go all the way back to Xenogears on PSX and this is right up there with those Xenosaga cutscenes.

I hear you. And I hear him. I just think it would be like me playing Mortal Kombat and getting mad because they made the fatalities gory and grotesque.

Thank you! I’m getting to the end I believe of Chapter 3. There are tons of cutscenes but they are not as long so it’s much more bearable.

    I just freed Colony 9
