LAN Parties, even been to one?

Have you ever been to a LAN party? They're kinda nerdy and I don't think many people do them these days. But growing up, I was into PCs and gaming, and during a few times, I would go to a friends LAN party. If you don't know what a LAN party is, it's essentially a party or group event where people hook up a bunch of PCs and game together in the same room.

I remember the first time, we played Counter-strike source on PC. It was in our friends basement, and we just played for hours, drank and smoked. Was a blast. Sadly LAN parties are kinda dying out these days, but they still do them from time to time.

Have you ever been to one? Or even hosted one?

Maaan I started to do this a lot when the XBOX dropped because it made it so easy to do. No way I was going to be lugging around the big nerd towers we had as kids:

But yeah going over the homies house with 4 XBOX, TV's and Halo was so dope. You could play multiplayer without having to split the screen.

That was such a dope era.

This might be a bit embarrassing but I hung out with some nerds in my late teens. We'd have WoW sessions. LOL I saved up for my first computer and got it when I was 18 and started playing it. I thought it was stupid but then I really got into it. I stopped playing a few years after I started. It was too time-consuming. The LAN parties were fun though. We'd get pizza and just hang out for hours playing. We also did CoD parties with a few Xbox 360s and a few TVs. Was a simpler time. Thinking back now, I guess I was a nerd myself. Probably still am. lol

I still WOW from time to time, I'm a solo player and I don't talk to nobody.(too many racist in that game) I play it for the sole purpose to waste time, lol. it's fun at times but can get too repetitive so I'll jump on Quake Champions for a few matches. other then that I don't play like I used to. I've been playing WOW since warcraft(beginning) nothing to be embarrassed about. COD and BF were good games about 5 years ago, now they aren't as fun.

Anytime I brought up WoW outside my playing circle, I'd get ragged on for it lol

And yeah, I have not played CoD in years now. I think the last one I played was Ghosts and was not a fan of it. I loved Black Ops II though. That was probably my favorite game of the lot. My then-boyfriend and I would play the game almost every night. Had my own set up next to his with a smaller TV.

Nah I never played them but they look fun, I'll check them out. I have been trying to find a new FPS game to get into. The last one I was playing on the regular was DOOM 2016. The older I get, the pickier I get with my games. I have limited free time so I want the games I play to be worth the time.

Haha, that's what the LAN parties I went to was like. Just towers on small desks. On top of that, the room we had the LAN party in, was so damn crowded. It was like 6 guys in a room that was really small.
That's all I did during my first semester of college...my roommates were super nerds but we did that all the time
Ha nice! Do you miss it at all? I had a lot of fun at LAN parties. Mainly at the time because I never had a decent PC growing up, so the LAN parties were also an excuse for me to play some PC games. I remember this one dude was playing Half-Life 2. I had heard of the game, but I was mesmerized by how cool the game looked back then.

I wouldn't say it's embarrassing. If you're having fun, who cares. I never played WoW, but I know it's very popular. I just never got into the RPG genre because I don't have the patience for them anymore. idk why. Maybe it's like you said, it was too time-consuming.

Hell yeah. I think it's kinda just an excuse to hang with friends. There would be times where we'd just drink, eat food, and just talk about life.

Nerd used to be a phrase that people hated, but now they've adopted it as a good thing about one's character. Like I'll admit, I'm a nerd. I get into tech, gaming, comic books, superhero movies, star wars, all that stuff people would consider nerdy. Same with geek, I think people are accepting of that word more now because it is kinda a characteristic of people now.

I played Quake once or twice myself. But I remember it being so much fun.

Has anyone here thought of ever hosting their own LAN parties recently or in the future? I had considered starting one with a group of friends, but with covid I kinda put the idea on hold. But, I think I might revive that idea soon.

I played quake when it was a regular FPS, I remember when Quake Arena dropped I was like WTF is this? I moved to Unreal Tournament and got hooked on that.

QC isn't like doom (although the character from Doom is playable in Quake) it's straight up shoot to kill and it's Multi player not a story.

You're right. I mean these days, it isn't a "nerd" thing to play video games, enjoy anime, be into comics, have a tech hobby, and so on. I feel like 10 years ago it still was considered a bad or off-putting thing but times have def changed. I mean I know some grown adults who are into things like Pokemon and have no shame of it and not many people will make bad remarks about it anymore.
