Message boards are 40 year old technology and although they are good for call and response type of situations they are really not made for social interaction and expression. Since Web 2.0 there has been a great deal of effort to help people to not only personalize their space but remain in their own space. RSS feeds are personalized, Facebook profiles let's you have a space for you to express yourself with limits. Twitter is the same.
Now we are moving into the era of federated spaces through open source applications like Mastodon.
The times are indeed changing.
