I think for most of us, we tend to have a few brands that we like and stick with for our tech needs. I was like this for a long time. I was always an LG, Samsung, or HP gal and wouldn't buy anything be it a phone, monitor, TV, screen, tablet, or whatever that wasn't any of those brands. I started branching out when I researched more and read reviews. I have found that most brands get some things right and some things wrong so it is a balancing act. I am not afraid to try a new brand these days when it comes to tech-related items but I will research the item itself and the brand before I spend my money.

I'm pretty much the same with my computer parts, TV's and phones. I won't switch if I've never had an issue with a particular brand, like Samsung phone's and TV's I have had these components for years and never had an issue. I love LG for my monitors (i used to love LG phone's) until the Note series came for Samsung, after getting my first note, that's all I use now. If it's a good brand and they haven't done me wrong, I'll stick with them.

BUT... I will try new brands from time to time, and the majority of the time I usually go right back to what I like best.

Samsung LG MSI Gigabyte Pioneer Klipsch JVC Puma (the main brands I have always stuck with)

I’m down to try a new brand what I wont do is try a new barber.

At this point what drives me to a brand is customer service over anything. If I buy something from you and you’re making me bring two receipts, a UPC code, proof of registering online then I wont deal with you.

That’s what drove me to buying Apple products because Sony outright refused to cover my laptop under warranty for a known defect because I didn’t have a receipt from 2 years in the past.

You bought Apple because of the solid performance of BSD.

I'm not open to closed source anything.
I bought a cheap laptop from Walmart and wiped that hard drive less then two hours after I got it home.It worked after the new install and it has held up nicely.
This is a smart move. I think more people need to get into open-source and Linux in general. We shouldn't allow ourselves to be tracked like farm animals with a number that attributes to our value.

I feel like I am going to have to wait another 2 or maybe 3 years before a solid Linux-powered phone is an option. That is fine, I will wait but I would like to get a new phone. I am currently on the fence with it though. I don't need a new-new one. I am looking at getting maybe an s10+ since it is 3 years old and a lot cheaper than the newer models. I don't know when Android 12 is coming out though.

    It's been out since Oct.

I have been watching SailfishOS for years and they are still fighting for a share of the US market.

I heard about SailfishOS but still not up to the mark may be lack of big people involvement and lack of user friendly UI otherwise security is way better.

Oh damn, I missed it LOL I was too busy working and dealing with family drama I had no idea 12 dropped.

I am really hoping they get something going. Like I want a phone that is Linux powered but still has the good features of a flagship. I know the apps will be limited but that is fine. I don't use very many anyway. I can make do if my privacy is more secure.

What "mark" are you looking for it to meet?
What "big people" are you referring to and why does that make a difference with open source solutions?
What exactly about the user interface are you unhappy with?
How do you quantify that Sailfish OS's security is better than Android's?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't mean to sound pushy, but I love looking at the details in stuff like this.
I found a visual that annotates the complete stack to help me see what you are saying:

I like the sandbox feature in Android 12. You can give an approximate location if an app wants to learn your GPS.
    Genius!

I have ripped out the GPS on my phone and I use WiFi as my "approximate" location if I had to give my location to an app.

Nothing gets GPS in my phone. Front-facing camera stays blocked as well. lol

I just want an open-source option for once. I know you can jailbreak phones and have more privacy. I did that with one of my old Galaxies.

Do you know a fair bit about phones? If so, what phone would you recommend getting? I just want something with a juicy battery and a good camera. I don't play games or anything so having a powerhouse of a phone is not needed.

I'm on the software side of things when it comes to phones. Manufacturers have their own "systems on a chip" designs. They are all different. But keep your eye on Sailfish. 👌
